She was born in Chipiona, Cádiz, Spain and was nicknamed "The Greatest".
Jurado began performing flamenco at a very young age, debuting on the big screen in 1962 with "Los guerrilleros", acting alongside Manolo Escobar. She also played a main role in 1966's "Proceso a una estrella" and 1971's "Una chica casi decente". While temporarily living in Argentina, the Spanish diva participated in a successful musical called "La zapatera prodigiosa", based on Federico García Lorca's work. After teaming with composer Manuel Alejandro, Rocío Jurado became a major and beloved figure on the Latin music scene, acclaimed throughout America and Spain after releasing "Muera el amor" and "Señora", among other hits.

Son las seis y media
Y nuestro avión
Sale a las diez.
Él está sumido
En un duermevela
Y en oriente empieza
Salgo de la cama
él se agita en sueños
Va a escuchar latir
Mi corazón.
Ando de puntillas
Busco una maleta
Y me voy vistiendo
En el salón.
Espérame
Te necesito más que al aire
Que a la vida.
Espérame
Ya nunca más
Nos besaremos
A escondidas.
Espérame
Roba un minuto de ese tiempo
En el reloj.
Calma tus nervios
No te inquietes, por favor.
Domina un poco
Esa tormenta en tu interior.
Espérame
Voy a dejar todo por ti
En esta mañana.
Espérame
Mi cuerpo está temblando
Como una campana.
Espérame
Que hay un lugar
Cruzando el mar
Para los dos.
Para vivir esta aventura
Entre tú y yo.
Toda una vida
Para hacernos el amor.
Tengo el pasaporte
No me olvido nada
Miro lentamente alrededor.
Escribo un mensaje
Lo dejo en la almohada
Sólo una palabra
Un simple adiós.
Él murmura algo
Se da media vuelta
Mientras salgo
De la habitación.
Y cierro la puerta
Bajo la escalera
Y en la calle
Está brillando el sol.
Espérame
Te necesito más que al aire
Que a la vida.
Espérame
Ya nunca más
Nos besaremos
A escondidas.
Espérame
Roba un minuto de ese tiempo
En el reloj.
Calma tus nervios
No me inquietes, por favor.
Domina un poco
Esa tormenta en tu interior.
Espérame
Voy a dejar todo por ti
En esta mañana.
Espérame
Mi cuerpo está temblando
Como una campana.
Espérame
Que hay un lugar
Cruzando el mar
Para los dos.
Para vivir esta aventura
Entre tú y yo.
Toda una vida
Para hacernos el amor.
Espérame.
The song "Espérame" by Rocío Jurado talks about a woman who is leaving her lover to pursue a new adventure. The song starts with everything in silence and the time being 6:30 in the morning, and the woman informs the listener that she and her lover's plane will depart at 10 am. Her lover is in a semi-conscious state, and sunrise has already begun in the east. She gets out of bed, and her lover stirs in his sleep, perhaps anticipating that she is about to leave. She whispers to him that he will be able to hear her heart beating, and she tiptoes around the room to her suitcase before heading to the living room to get dressed.
As the song progresses, she expresses her desire for her lover to wait for her and that she needs him more than she needs air to breathe or to live. She reassures him that she will never again have to hide their love and steal kisses, promising that they will have all the time in the world to be together, and they have a place waiting for them across the sea. She urges him to control his internal storm and wait for her, for she has left everything behind to be with him.
Ultimately, "Espérame" is a song about taking risks and following your dreams, even if it means leaving someone important behind. It is about the importance of love and how it can inspire us to do great things.
