It's actually pretty amazing what is accomplished in this 3 1/2-minute number- Eddie has to: 1) convey his ENTIRE backstory with Columbia & Frank; 2) flirt with every principal actor; 3) play the sax; 4) ride a motorcycle; 5) get a quick hump session in; 6) Die; all while 7) singing a kick-ass 50s style rock song. I, as many others, was saddened to wake up this morning and see Meat Loaf had passed. While many others turned to the music video for “I Would Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That)”, but the first thing, even more than that song, that I think of when I hear Meat Loaf’s name is this scene in “Rocky Horror”.

This man was, still is, and always will be a legend.

He got the role of Eddie, so I heard because of his ability to speak quickly and clearly. Story goes the guys behind he movie were testing vocalists for the role, and none of them could sing “Hot Patootie,” as written. They were afraid they’d have to change the lyrics, and didn’t want to do it. Meatloaf said, “I can sing that,” and he did. The rest is history.

I forget the backstory on why Eddie was important, beyond being Dr. Scott's nephew (I think he used part of Eddie's brain in Rocky); but I do know the final straw for Frank in this scene was when Rocky started dancing. Can't have that.

+Jess Mann He was a delivery boy, and he got drawn into the castle, somehow, where he was apparently one of the..."playmates" of the house (Frank hints at this when he tells Rocky "he had a certain boyish charm, but no muscle," and then when Dr. Scott's song Eddie's Teddy when he says "he must have been drawn into something," and finally at the end before the floor show when Columbia accuses Frank of throwing people away she infers that Frank was once with Eddie, and got tired of him and made Rocky "so named for the rocks in his head!") and Frank used half of Eddie's brain to create Rocky. ("Do you think it was a mistake, splitting the brain between the two?")

Have to really appreciate all the subtleties of this amazing scene. The panning in on the kickstand, the sunglasses/helmet throw and helmet clunk, the 2 wooo's, leaning on his motorcycle while singing with Frank in the background looking perturbed, Eddie's sneer and finger pointing, the way he looks at Rocky up and down like who the f are you, the choreographed dancing bits of the crowd upstairs, zooming in on his boot kicks while playing sax, the part where he keeps singing and gives a no look pass of his sax to Brad as he walks by and doesn't break his loving stare at Columbia, zooming in on the 'love' and 'hate' tattoos on his fingers, etc. One of the most epic 4 minute scenes ever filmed.

Richard O’Brien said to Meatloaf that it is okay if he fluffs some of the lyrics in the song, as the previous actor in the original stage production used to struggle with the lyrics due to its fast speed. Meatloaf didn’t have that problem and he nailed the entire song in only one rehearsal.

I remember being a lil lost in the movie when I first saw it in '78. I was a teenager and just trying to sort everything out and then Meat Loaf burst thru the wall of ice and I was just blown away. The voice. The flourishes with his head, hands and body. The Harley and the sax. Just so cool! Incredible talent. Everyone lauds Chris Farley for his amazing 'big guy super agile physical comedy' but Meatloaf had him beat by decades, and could sing with the best of them. One of the few true rock stars who was able to really act.

I saw a stage performance of Rocky Horror in Manchester last night and the audience went wild when this song began and Eddie appeared on stage. At the end, he got the second loudest cheer after the actor who played Frank-N-Furter

Godspeed My Idol. Meat was a HUGE part of my life & I heard new music of his when I was 2, in 2003 when CHSIB came out. I had listened to Bat 2 and Bat 1 via my parents playing it while I watched my Thomas VHS tapes when I was 2-3 & laid in my crib for the first year of my life

We used to go watch The Rocky Horror picture show at the Varsity in St. Louis at midnight. They always played the video of Paradise by the Dashboard Light before the movie started. Great 80's memories. I remember when Bat out of Hell came out in the late 70's. listened to it over and over.

I seen a remake version in the Grand Opera House, in Belfast Northern Ireland a few years ago. I had seen the movie on TV, but watching the show in the opera house was a 100 times better.
I just wish I'd have been able to see this for the first time at release.

I only just noticed this but it’s so nice to see a plus size lad being the object of female desire and just all around cool and sexy… obvs in a campy way cause that’s the movie but that just makes Eddie’s portrayal consistent with RHPS’s internal logic. The first time I saw this movie I was about 10, and I was alone in the house at night. I dont remember why. But this movie was like watching a train wreck. I couldn't look away. It was horrifying and fascinating.

And as the director you would be willing to risk injury to the star before the shot was complete? You know nothing about movies. It is all fake. All that matters is what goes down on the video once it is edited and with CGI it is even worse. Captain America doesn't really have a Thor like shield. It's movies.

Fun fact: Frank used half of Eddie's brain to make Rocky because he kidnapped Eddie with unknown reasons to why he was so attracted to him. When Eddie and Columbia started their little thing Frank got immensely upset because he not only lost the man he wanted but he lost a groupie. That enough was a good reason, in Frank's opinion, to murder Eddie. But when this song comes into motion you can see from the facial expressions that Frank is annoyed but he is willing to deal through it until Eddie looks at Rocky, that struck something in him to be more cautious. Once Rocky started dancing himself and Eddie was all over Columbia Frank finally snapped and killed the man he truly loved out of pure spite and jealousy. Yes he truly loved Rocky, but he loved Eddie first.
