You Showed Me
Roger McGuinn Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You showed me how to do exactly what you do
How I fell in love with you oh oh it's true
I'm in love with you

You showed how to say exactly what you say
In that very special way oh oh it's true
You fell for me too
And when I tried it I could see you fall
And I've decided it's not a trick at all
You taught it to me too exactly what you do
And now you love me too oh oh it's true
You fell for me too

And when I tried it I could see you fall
And I've decided it's not a trick at all
You taught it to me too exactly what you do

And now you love me too oh oh it's true
We're in love we too we too

Overall Meaning

The song β€œYou Showed Me” by Roger McGuinn starts with the singer expressing how he fell in love with the person who taught him how to love them. The lyrics β€œYou showed me how to do exactly what you do, how I fell in love with you, oh oh it's true” indicate that the person who taught him how to love someone did so by example, and he fell in love with them in the process. He goes on to say β€œYou showed how to say exactly what you say, in that very special way oh oh it's true, you fell for me too” which means that the person they love taught them how to communicate effectively, and in doing that they also fell in love with each other.

In the second verse, the singer says β€œAnd when I tried it I could see you fall, and I've decided it's not a trick at all, you taught it to me too, exactly what you do, and now you love me too oh oh it's true, you fell for me too”. This means that when the singer mimicked the way the person expresses themselves, they reciprocated the feelings, and now they are in love with each other. The lyrics are a testament to how love can be taught, and how it can grow from admiration and emulation. The repetitive β€œoh oh it’s true” mentions in the song emphasize the realness of the love between the two individuals.

McGuinn's voice has held up magnificently over the years.

I also have this song and Time of the Season as two of my all time favorites. This is such a hauntingly beautiful song.

I like both versions of this.. have this on preflyte by the byrds and I love it...that being said the turtles do it very well too!!! both different and both great

thisistheworldtoday

He and Gene wrote this and gave to Turtles who made it a huge hit...what talent

McGuinn is bare bones nowadays. Just himself, 3 guitars and a banjo. No auto tune, backup singers, earpiece, or axe to grind. Just a man and the tool he used to help forge a generation.

Written by Gene Clark and McGuinn in their early years together when they were at their best.

Beautiful 7 - string guitar; played one of his a few years ago.

Hmm. I think he should have definitely done what Dylan did after Hendrix released All Along the Watchtower. And that's incorporate the improvements which the later cover instigated. The Turtles version of this McGuinn & Gene Clark tune improves everything that was going on in the early Byrds demo and in this live performance. The tempo, mood and superior enhanced chord structure the Turtles employed is definitive for me.

McGuinn and McGuire couldn't get much higher, but thats was what they were aiming for

If angels played the guitar they'd sound like Roger McGuinn
