Move Right In
Rollins Band Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well she's straight and look like a lot of fun
The bar's open I'm gonna go have a drink with everyone
Walking downtown skies can't get any greater
Haven't got no money and I haven't got a prayer
I'm gonna move right in (x3)
After we hang a little we're gonna have a little fun
Gonna go shoot and kill and go knife everyone
The bar looks like haven gonna have myself a drink
Hey man don't you know I fell right in to the swing
I'm Gonna move right in (x3) Yeah
Gonna go uptown so I can get myself straight
Gonna go see my mama see if I got myself a date
Time is runnin' out I'm comin' right down to the wire

Gotta go do something to get myself higher
I'm gonna move right in (x3) Hey

Overall Meaning

The Rollins Band's song Move Right In is a fast-paced rock song that makes for fun and exciting listening. However, when we break down the lyrics, a darker meaning emerges. The first few lines describe the singer's surroundings - a woman, a bar, and a fun night out on the town. But as the song progresses, it becomes clear that the singer is a troubled individual who has violent tendencies. He talks about "going to shoot and kill and knife everyone" and needing to "get himself higher." The repeated line "I'm gonna move right in" becomes more ominous with each repetition, as the singer seems to be hinting at a desire to take over or control his surroundings, rather than simply enjoying them.

The lyrics seem to be exploring themes of aggression, addiction, and a sense of powerlessness. The singer may feel like he has no control over his own life, and he may be seeking to assert himself through violent actions. However, he's also aware that his behavior is dangerous - hence the line about not having a prayer. The overall message seems to be one of desperation and a desire to break free from a destructive cycle. In other words, the singer is looking for a way to "move right in" to a better life, rather than being stuck in his current situation.

The live version of "Move Right In" captured on "Electro Convulsive Therapy" (1993) is ferocious. In fact, the entire album is an absolute gem. It was originally issued exclusively for the Japanese market, but serious Rollins Band fans in the USA could score an import copy at their local alternative record store. The band never sounded better than they do on this recording, which certainly belongs on any serious list of the Top Ten Live Albums of the rock era. "Electro Convulsive Therapy" definitely captures the phenomenally inventive, virtuosic and MUSICAL guitarist Chris Haskett at the apex of his career. He was the ideal musical foil for Henry Rollins.

For reasons known only to the powers that be at YouTube, "Electro Convulsive Therapy" has been kept off the platform, with the exception one track: "What Have I Got?" one listen to which should convince anyone that this album is an absolute "Must Get." https://youtu.be/NL6GkLbXMxQ

Saw The Rollins Band many times in the 80's when they toured the UK, and every gig was fucking immense! Simeon Cain and Andrew Weiss, fresh out of Greg Ginn's "Gone" project, were the backbone of Hank's band and those guys fucking ROCKED!!
