Lick My Wounds
Ron Pope Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh

Verse 1:
She stumbled in through the exit
21 but holds her liquor like a freshman
She don’t ever stay out this late
And when I look at her I can feel my pulse race

Chorus:
And if looks could kill
She would stop your heart
Not just a girl
But a work of art
Well, she cuts me deep
With the way she moves
Then she pulled me in
And she licked my wounds

Oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh

Verse 2:
I think the sun’s probably coming up
I don’t want to go home, but they threw us out
And I don’t ever stay out this late
But there’s something happening that made my pulse race

Chorus:
And if looks could kill
She would stop your heart
Not just a girl
But a work of art
Well, she cuts me deep
With the way she moves
Then she pulled me in
And she licked my wounds

What’s good for me, good for me now
What’s good for me, good for me now
What’s good for me, good for me now
What’s good for me, good for me now

Oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh oh

Chorus:
And if looks could kill
She would stop your heart
Not just a girl
But a work of art
Well, she cuts me deep
With the way she moves
Then she pulled me in
And she licked my wounds

And if looks could kill
She would stop your heart
Not just a girl
But a work of art
Well, she cuts me deep
With the way she moves
Then she pulled me in
And she licked my wounds

And if looks could kill
She would stop your heart (Oh oh oh)
Not just a girl
But a work of art (Oh oh oh)
Well, she cuts me deep
With the way she moves (Oh oh oh)

Then she pulled me in
And she licked my wounds (Oh oh oh)

Overall Meaning

"Lick My Wounds" is a soulful and seductive ballad by Ron Pope about the electric, spontaneous nature of a one-night stand with a captivating stranger. The song begins with a description of the girl's entrance into the club: she's young and seemingly inexperienced, but carries herself with a confident, alluring energy. The singer's heartbeat quickens as he watches her dance and move throughout the night, knowing that she could stop anyone's heart with just one glance. The passion between them intensifies as they're ejected from the club, and they find themselves alone in the ever-lightening morning, cat-and-mouse-ing throughout the city until they ultimately end up in his bed. She leaves, but not before embracing the singer and "licking his wounds," so to speak, providing both physical and emotional comfort.

Throughout the song, Pope juxtaposes the metaphorical language of love and pain with phrases associated with medicine and healing. In the chorus, the girl cuts the singer deep with the way she moves, but ultimately, she's the one who provides him with the kind of healing that he needs. The singer realizes that what may be dangerous for him - this unbridled, spontaneous love - is also what sets him free.

Overall, "Lick My Wounds" represents a night of unrestrained passion and spontaneity that the singer knows is fleeting but he chooses to embrace it anyway. It also speaks to the need for human connection, especially after feeling wounded or vulnerable.

I can dig it, I love the creativity used in this video. But a far cry from when it was just him and his guitar.

Why is everyone freaking about Ron Pope doesn't sound like he used to? This is honestly just one song from him that sounds like this. He hasn't lost anything, he hasn't changed enough to the point where people should be concerned about it. This is a very good song, the lyrics are genius and the instrumental is amazing. His fans should really be more loyal to him.

Tara Winchester I think us OG fans are used to his acoustic stuff. I honestly never bothered to listen to this version until just now because the acoustic is so damn amazing, I didn’t want to ruin it. And this....it just ruins it. His acoustic stuff is ALWAYS better. Always. This is just so not Ron Pope.
