Maggie May
Ron Wood Lyrics

Wake up, Maggie I think I got something to say to you
It's late September and I really should be back at school
I know I keep you amused, but I feel I'm being used
Oh, Maggie, I couldn't have tried any more
You led me away from home
Just to save you from being alone
You stole my heart, and that's what really hurts
The morning sun, when it's in your face really shows your age
But that don't worry me none in my eyes, you're everything

I laughed at all of your jokes
My love you didn't need to coax
Oh, Maggie, I couldn't have tried any more

You led me away from home
Just to save you from being alone
You stole my soul, and that's a pain I can do without.

All I needed was a friend to lend a guiding hand
But you turned into a lover, and, mother, what a lover you wore me out
All you did was wreck my bed
And, in the morning, kick me in the head
Oh, Maggie, I couldn't have tried any more
You led me away from home
'Cause you didn't want to be alone
You stole my heart, I couldn't leave you if I tried

I suppose I could collect my books and get on back to school
Or steal my daddy's cue and make a living out of playing pool
Or find myself a rock 'n' roll band
That needs a helping hand
Oh, Maggie, I wish I'd never seen your face
You made a first-class fool out of me
But I'm as blind as a fool can be
You stole my heart, but I love you anyway

Maggie I wish that I'd never seen your face
I'll get a ride home one of these days, oh-oh

Overall Meaning

'Wake up Maggie I think I got something to say to you' is the opening line of Ron Wood's song 'Maggie May' released in 1971. In the very first line of the song, the character that sings is waking up half-asleep Maggie to talk about his emotions. He says that it's late September and he really should be back at school, implying that he might be slacking and losing deadlines because of Maggie. The character feels like he is being used by Maggie, and despite keeping her amused, he's still not happy with the condition he's in.

The song is a story of a young lad's infatuation with an older woman named Maggie May. He meets Maggie at a time when he is vulnerable and seeks a friend, and she leads him away from home. The young man fell in love with the wrong person as Maggie only uses him, destroys his life, and leaves him brokenhearted. The character couldn't have tried any more, but Maggie continued to use him, eventually stealing more than his heart. The song talks about how Maggie May was the rock that the young man indulged in, and it was that love that sacrificed everything else he cherished. The final stanza of the song portrays how he wishes that he had never met Maggie and longs to leave her gracefully.

Probably the greatest live performance ever of Maggie May. Rod's singing, J'Anna's mandolin, Ronnie's guitar, the crowd singing every word, although most of them weren't even born at the time, it's all there. What makes it even more special is that he's back in London, playing Albert Hall, looking at Ronnie and sings about going back home (in a genius passage of Gasoline Alley). They grow up together in London, if you didn't know. Totally awesome.

Everyone in that room was having fun. I played the crap out of this album when it came out. Rod's music is the soundtrack for my life. Takes me back to a simpler time.
