Blades has composed dozens of musical hits, the most famous of which is "Pedro Navaja," a song about a neighborhood thug whose day to die has come, inspired by "Mack the Knife." He also composed and sings what many Panamanians consider their second national anthem. The song is titled "Patria" (Motherland). He remains wildly popular in Panama and much admired throughout Latin America, and managed to attract 18% of the vote in his failed attempt to win the Panamanian presidency in 1994. In September 2004, he was appointed minister of tourism by Panamanian president Martín Torrijos. He holds law degrees from the University of Panama and Harvard School of Law.

Oye latino oye hermano oye amigo
No te dejes confundir
Busca el fondo y su razón
Recuerda se ven las caras
Pero nunca el corazón
No te dejes confundir
Pa' lante, pa' lante, pa' lante, pa' lante, pa' lante

Rubén Blades's song, "Plástico," is a critique of the superficiality and materialism present in modern society. The lyrics describe a plastic couple who judge people based on their social status, and who value appearances over substance. The plasticity of the couple is reflected in the "plástico," or "plastic," city they inhabit, characterized by skyscrapers and a lack of authentic emotion. The song warns against succumbing to the allure of material wealth, instead urging listeners to prioritize genuine human connections and reject societal pressures to conform to superficial standards.
The first two stanzas of "Plástico" describe a type of person commonly found in contemporary society: those who prioritize their own image over genuine connections with others. The lyrics suggest that these people often judge others based on their social status and appearance, and that they are willing to compromise their own values in order to maintain a façade of wealth and status. The third stanza then expands this critique to the entire city and society, which is portrayed as superficial, inauthentic, and lacking in genuine human emotion.
The refrain of "Plástico" urges listeners to reject this superficiality and materialism, and to seek deeper, authentic connections with others. The song encourages listeners to be proud of their heritage and to celebrate their personal identity, rather than blindly conforming to societal pressures. Ultimately, "Plástico" is a powerful critique of contemporary society and a call to action for those who value genuine human connection over materialism.
