Braff was a wonderfully characterful and melodic player with an immediately identifiable sound and unique tone on the cornet, an uncommon instrument in post-war jazz. He style was fundamentally based on that of earlier players including Louis Armstrong, Bobby Hackett and Bunny Berigan but he transcended these influences to always sounds fresh, sparky and somehow modern.
He was born in Boston and began playing in local clubs in the 1940s. In 1949, he was hired to play with the Edmond Hall Orchestra. He relocated to New York in 1953 where he was much in demand for band dates and recordings.
He died February 10, 2003, in Chatham, Massachusetts.
"Sure, they’ve made statements about my supposedly combining a modern approach with a feeling for traditional forms. Well, people say all sorts of things, because they want to categorise and label. I’ve only ever had two labels. Either it’s good or it stinks." - Ruby Braff speaking in 1968

Love walked right in and brought my sunniest day
One magic moment and my heart seemed to know that love said hello
Though not a word was spoken
One look, and I forgot the gloom of the past
One look and I had found my future at last
One look and I had found a world completely new
One magic moment and my heart seemed to know that love said hello
Though not a word was spoken
One look and I had found a world completely new
When love walked in with you
The song "Love Walked In" by Ruby Braff and Roger Kellaway is a love song that speaks to the transformative power of love. The opening lines of the song, "Love walked right in and drove the shadows away," set the tone for the entire song, as love is presented as a force that can dispel darkness and bring light into one's life. The singer describes how, with just one look from their beloved, they were able to forget the pain of the past and see a completely new world.
The magic of this moment is emphasized throughout the song, as the singer repeats the phrase "one magic moment" to describe how they felt when their heart realized that love had arrived. This moment is all-encompassing, as the singer finds their future, their happiness, and a whole new world in this one look from their beloved. The power of love is even more striking because, as the song emphasizes, no words were needed for the love to be communicated.
In all, "Love Walked In" is a powerful testament to the way that love can transform a life. It describes the way that love can drive away darkness and bring light, and how it can fill one's life with hope and joy in a single moment.
