Braff was a wonderfully characterful and melodic player with an immediately identifiable sound and unique tone on the cornet, an uncommon instrument in post-war jazz. He style was fundamentally based on that of earlier players including Louis Armstrong, Bobby Hackett and Bunny Berigan but he transcended these influences to always sounds fresh, sparky and somehow modern.
He was born in Boston and began playing in local clubs in the 1940s. In 1949, he was hired to play with the Edmond Hall Orchestra. He relocated to New York in 1953 where he was much in demand for band dates and recordings.
He died February 10, 2003, in Chatham, Massachusetts.
"Sure, they’ve made statements about my supposedly combining a modern approach with a feeling for traditional forms. Well, people say all sorts of things, because they want to categorise and label. I’ve only ever had two labels. Either it’s good or it stinks." - Ruby Braff speaking in 1968

It must go to someone of course
It can't be sister or brother
And so I love my horse
But horses are frequently silly
Mine ran from the beach of Okhala
And left me alone for a filly
So I have picked you up
I'm a sentimental sap, that's all
What's the use of trying not to fall?
I have no will, you've made your kill
Cause you took advantage of me
I'm just like an apple on a bough
And you're gonna shake me down somehow
So, what's the use, you've cooked my goose
Cause you took advantage of me
I'm so hot and bothered that
I don't know my elbow from my ear
I suffer something awful each time
You go and much worse when you're near
Here I am with all my bridges burned
Just a babe in arms where you're concerned
So lock the doors and call me yours
Cause you took advantage of me.
I'm a sentimental sap, that's all
What's the use of trying not to fall?
I have no will, you've made your kill
Cause you took advantage of me
I'm just like an apple on a bough
And you're gonna shake me down somehow
So, what's the use, you've cooked my goose
Cause you took advantage of me
I'm so hot and bothered that
I don't know my elbow from my ear
I suffer something awful each time
You go and much worse when you're near
Here I am with all my bridges burned
Just a babe in arms where you're concerned
So lock the doors and call me yours
Cause you took advantage of me
You took advantage of me
The lyrics to "You Took Advantage of Me" by the Ruby Braff / George Barnes Quartet depict a narrator who finds themselves in a vulnerable position after someone has taken advantage of their affection. The first few lines create a contrast between a girl who possesses a nurturing and caring heart, like that of a mother, and the limitations of who she can love. The singer reveals that they have developed affection for their horse, but horses are unreliable and often exhibit foolish behavior. The horse runs away, leaving the singer alone, which leads them to seek comfort and love elsewhere, ultimately finding solace in the person to whom the song is directed.
The second verse portrays the singer as a sentimental person, unable to resist falling in love. They acknowledge their lack of willpower and vulnerability, stating that the person they are in love with has taken advantage of this weakness. They compare themselves to an apple hanging on a tree branch, ready to be shaken down, indicating that they are easily manipulated. The chorus is repeated to emphasize the point that the singer's vulnerabilities have been exploited and that they are now powerless in the face of love.
The third verse expresses the singer's heightened emotional state whenever the person in question is around. They feel confused and disoriented, not being able to think straight. The suffering they experience intensifies when the person departs, indicating their strong attachment. The line "all my bridges burned" suggests that the singer has burned their metaphorical bridges in pursuit of this love, leaving them vulnerable and dependent. Despite this, the singer pleads for the person to lock the doors and claim them as their own, showing their willingness to submit and continue in this one-sided relationship.
Overall, "You Took Advantage of Me" explores the themes of vulnerability, manipulation, and the consequences of being taken advantage of in a relationship. It portrays a narrator who acknowledges their own weaknesses and inability to resist falling in love, ultimately being left feeling powerless and at the mercy of someone who has exploited their affections.
