Towards 1970 there began to materialise the Basque City. Never before had the noun and the adjective joined together. One spoke of the Mountain, the Earth, the Nation, all of them Basque; but the privileged space where the world became truly wide seemed forbidden to those who wished to express themselves in the language that sustains the adjective, the Basque tongue. It was as if someone, the Spirit of the Time, for example, might have hurled out an order: "Either change your language, or change your place". Which in the case of RO, meant: "Dear friend, either devote yourself to romantic music or to patriotic music. And if not, give it up". The message was clear. It meant solitude. And it was a curse. A snare.
RO put up with the solitude, and against the long road he opposed his will and his intelligence. RO forgot the curse: from his first records, his material was diverse, general, non-religious: he could do with the laundry, a van, or a visit from a woman. RO eluded the snare: instead of crossing to the other side of the border, he remained close to it and took on its history. He didn¹t become the chameleon of the storybook tale, neither in a branch of the General Bank of Music, nor in the International Basque Singer for Tourists. He remained a personal creator, with committed lyrics and music towards his loved, hated, distant, close Basque City.

Larre berdeak, etxe zuri, teila gorriak,
Jendarme auto bat bidean
Bildots artean, pasatzen
Etxe elizetan otoitzak, betiko otoitzak
neguko kearen antzera
leun igotzen
Martin Larralde ez da sekula itzuli baina itzuli balitz
(arantzak barrurantza itzuliak dituen sagarroiak lez)
itzuli izan balitz zer?
gaur igandea da
Larre berdeak, etxe zuri, teila gorriak
Jendarme auto bat bidean
Bayonne 17, panopetik
Jendia familia erretratuetan bezala
Larritasuneraino perfumaturiko arima erakutsiz doa mezetara
Inork ere ez du dena ohitura
dena errua
dena barkamena
Oroimenaren korapiloa deslotzen
Inork ez du dena ohitura
dena errua
dena barkamena
Koblakaririk behar
Martin Larralde honelako egun batez hil zen
galeretan
Begiak zabalik etzanda
Zerua itsaso zikin bat da
Zerua itsaso zikin bat dela esanez
Agian zerua itsaso zikin bat dela esanez
The song 'Martin Larralde' by Ruper Ordorika is a tribute to a person named Martin Larralde who passed away on a certain day. The lyrics describe the surroundings of the occasion which suggest that the person was important and well-known. The green hills, white houses and red tiles of the place are mentioned in the beginning of the song. Then, the arrival of a gendarme car also indicates the importance of the person. The church bells are heard which create a solemn mood. The lyrics suggest that Martin Larralde never came back, but if he did come back, it would have been on a Sunday. The repetition of the words 'diena ohitura, dena errua, dena barkamena' which translate to 'everything is a habit, everything is a mistake, everything is forgivable' indicate that people are flawed and forgiving is important. The song ends with the realization that the sky is a vast ocean, which could suggest the possibility of life beyond our imagination.
