He had no formal piano training and spent his early adulthood in the Navy. Conway was talent-spotted while playing in a London club, signed to Columbia Records and spent the mid 1950s providing backing for their artists including Gracie Fields and Joan Regan. However, the commercial potential of Conway's unique percussive piano style (which he attributed to a missing fingertip he had severed many years previously with a bread slicer) was too great for him to remain in the background for long. Conway recorded his first solo single in 1957, a novelty instrumental medley of pop standards.
1959 was Conway's annus mirabilis, with a cumulative total of 83 weeks on the UK Singles Chart. This included two self-penned number one instrumentals, "Side Saddle" and "Roulette", the latter deposing Elvis Presley's "A Fool Such As I".
Conway maintained a chart presence in the early 1960s, and was a fixture on light entertainment TV shows and radio for many years afterwards thanks to his instantly recognisable piano style. For some years his career was blighted by ill-health, and his later life was notable for charity work. He founded in 1990, along with his friend writer and broadcaster Richard Hope-Hawkins, the Russ Conway Cancer Fund and they staged in major theatre's charity gala shows that raised thousands of pounds and was donated to numerous cancer charities. Russ, who never married, died on 2000-11-16 [1]. Richard Hope Hawkins gave the main address at Russ's funeral held at the historic St Mary Redcliffe Church, Bristol. Elton John sent a wreath. In 2001 Richard devised, staged and directed a tribute to Russ at the Colston Hall, Bristol with an all-star cast. The money raised which was £18,000 was donated to St Peter's Hospice, Bristol.

We were always criticised for playing this at my theatre. If only we could have played it like this! Wonderful man.

I have a lot of time for this gent.,,,,a World War 2 hero who, sadly, is no longer with us. He held the Distinguished Service Medal for his Naval service during the War. He certainly did his bit at the Country's time of need,,,,and deserved every bit of success he had later. Alas, he did not enjoy good healh and passed away far too early. R.I.P to a brave man. Thanks for posting this clip.

I love this, I knew the tune for a long time. Then i found the actual vinyl while looking threw my late grandads old records at my nan's. She was in the other room and came to see what i was up to and was suprised that i enjoyed the old music so we had a little dance! Good Times. I'm 28 now and most of my favourite music is still well before my time. I can't help but agree with people who say music just isn't the same anymore. There s still good music out there but it just seems much less consistent to me.

Fantastic...great melody and piano play!

Oh my god. My mom taught me how to play the first bit of this tune 43 years ago. I saw the advert and started thinking about the old piano that sat in our living room in the 70's. Hearing this made those memories click back into place. Cant believe that tune has been stuck in my head for all these years and not knowing what it was. She used to call it the "Tiddly om pom pom music"

@Kavi Corben In England it is called chopsticks, but if you search that up it will come up with a completely different song

@Per Flohwalzer (Flea Waltz), a simple piece whose composer is long forgotten, intended for beginner piano players. Its purpose in teaching music is likely the inspiration for the name of this song.
(The piece is also known by a number of other names in other countries, so depending on where you live you may recognize it under a different one.)

Does that 14 sec intro has it's own title?
