World I Used to Know
Ryan Star Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Lights go down, and we don't make a sound
And yeah we want so much more
But nights like this are perfect for now
Never gonna make it stop
You can't make it stop
Never gonna make it stop
You can't make it stop
This is the town I used to know
This is the school we used to own
This is the wind that used to blow
This is the world I used to know
Lying underneath the bed
Your ceiling never felt so far away
And tomorrow when we say goodbye
We'll promise that we'll always stay the same
But we're never gonna make it stop
You can't make it stop
Never gonna make it stop
You can't make it stop
This is the town I used to know
This is the school we used to own
This is the wind that used to blow
This is the world I used to know
This is the world I used to know
This is the world I used to know
We wished for lots of things
When we were seventeen
We're waiting for it now
Waiting for it now, oh
I've got a million dreams
There is a life I see
I'm waiting for it now
Waiting for it now, oh
We wished for lots of things
When we were seventeen
We're waiting for it now
Waiting for it now, oh
This is the school we used to own
This is the school we used to own
This is the school we used to
This is the school we used to
This is the school we used to own
This is the world I used to know
This is the world I used to know
This is the world I used to know
This is the world we all outgrew
The song "World I Used to Know" by Ryan Star depicts a nostalgic reverie about the past, reflecting on a simpler and more carefree time. The opening line "set the scene and close the door" provides a subtle indication to focus on what's within oneself and make oneself comfortable in a space of recollection. The reference to "lights go down, and we don't make a sound" possibly means that the only sound that matters is the prominent emotional response coming from the remembrance of a bygone era.
The chorus further elaborates the setting by describing the town, school, wind and world in which the singer used to reside. The longing for that old world is palpable, accompanied by the realization that it is impossible to reclaim it. The feeling of limitation is conveyed through the lines "Never gonna make it stop / You can't make it stop," indicating that time cannot be stopped and the journey must go on.
The middle section of the song highlights the idea of hope, featuring the words "Waiting for it now," signifying that the singer is still anticipating a future that may not necessarily be the same as what’s been lost. The repetition of the phrase "This is the school we used to own / This is the school we used to" paired with the repeated line "This is the world I used to know" clinches the tragic, yet regretful feeling of the fleeting nature of youth and how it eventually fades.
