There is nothing between you and me
Just the same cold walls
The same locked doors
That deny access at every step
There is nothing between you and me
All the technological marvels of the world
Won't bring us together
As I sit at the bar
And knock 'em back
I let my mind slip
To the past
And I remember
Or, better yet, regret
The years I spent alone
'Til you came for me
And blotted out the sun
A universe went dark
In the arms of a dying sun
We run around in parallel mazes
So infinite, yet all alone
Reaching out again to the light, to the void
That could eat us alive
Another breath of life
A roll of the dice
On the tip of my tongue
Acid drops burn up
Chemical make up break up
Signal of life exposed
Nothing between you and me
There is nothing between you and me
Just the same blank walls
The same terminals
That deny access at every step
There is nothing between you and me
All the technological marvels of the world
Won't bring us together
'Cause love is chemical
In the song Chemicals by SMP, the lyrics reflect the challenges that modern-day technology presents when it comes to love and relationships. The opening lines, "Nothing between you and me, there is nothing between you and me, just the same cold walls, the same locked doors that deny access at every step," are indicative of the difficulties of creating meaningful connections in a world that often prioritizes convenience and isolation. The allusion to the "technological marvels of the world" suggests that while technology has made communication and information more accessible, it has also erected barriers that make it difficult to forge deep and lasting human connections.
The chorus, "There is nothing between you and me, all the technological marvels of the world won't bring us together, cause love is chemical," highlights the idea that love is a powerful chemical reaction that cannot be replicated or replaced by any amount of technology or digital communication. The use of the word "chemical" emphasizes the biological nature of love and suggests that it is something that cannot be reduced to a set of algorithms, formulas or equations.
The second verse of the song emphasizes the sense of loneliness and isolation that can occur even in relationships. The singer is sitting at a bar, drinking and reflecting on his past, regretting the years he spent alone before finding someone who "blotted out the sun." The metaphorical use of the term "blotted out the sun" emphasizes the idea that this person represents a transformative force in his life, changing the very nature of his existence.
