According to an interview with VCA, the first time Saint Motel heard one of their songs in public was at a TGI Friday’s.
In this interview, A/J says:
“I used to assist this photographer here in LA doing high-fashion shoots. One day, we were discussing this model. She was pretty, but there was something about her that just didn’t quite work together. Her facial features, there was nothing wrong with them, but something was off. The most beautiful eyes, the most beautiful lips, most beautiful ears, but for some reason things didn’t fit together. And I thought that was a really interesting idea. But that’s a good example, too, of a song where maybe you might have to listen a couple of times before you pick up on the subject matter. It’s loose enough where it can mean all sorts of different things to different people, but at the same time, it’s not the happiest lyrical idea, even though the music’s so happy. So it gives this nice contrast that only people that really are paying attention will notice. Most people just think of it as a happy, summery pop song.”

Honestly, when you look at me
It's like a gun goes off, deep inside of me
I can hardly move
I can barely breathe, near your features
The t-t-t-t-t-t-trouble is
It's just so obvious
Where you cut away
Left your flaws behind, in the ether
F-f-face of puzzle pieces
That don't fit together
Puzzle pieces
That don't fit together
It's never right
But you just can't move on
You can't decide
Take away or put on
Your design
But you won't stop working
A masterpiece
In the flesh, it's your puzzle
It's your puzzle
It's yours
D-d-d-doctor's hands
Carry out the plans
To take you all apart and put you back again
Your face is canvas
And your own body serves, as your easel
It's just, it's just, it's just so hard to quit
When you're hooked on it
You're just a junkie craving one more plastic fix
Keep you up to date
With all the latest trends, of the seasons
F-f-face of puzzle pieces
That don't fit together
Puzzle Pieces
That don't fit together
It's ever right
But you just can't move on
You can't decide
Take away or put on
Your design
But you won't stop working
A masterpiece
In the flesh, it's your puzzle
It's your puzzle
It's yours
The lyrics of Saint Motel's song "Puzzle Pieces" describe the complex feelings that arise when someone is attracted to another person despite their flaws. The "g-g-g-g-gotta say" at the beginning of the song is the singer admitting the truth of their attraction to the person, even though it feels like a gun going off inside them. The trouble is, however, that the person's flaws are so obvious, perhaps even from plastic surgery remains, or scars. Yet, the attraction remains strong, it's like a jigsaw puzzle of faces that can't seem to fit together but are still working on it.
The second verse introduces the idea of the attraction being like a plastic fix -- a craving that is difficult to resist, even when the person knows that it might not be good for them. The line about being kept up-to-date with the latest trends suggests that perhaps the person is trying to keep up appearances, trying to fit in with what's popular, even though they know that it won't make them happy. This complex mix of emotions is summed up in the chorus with the line "It's never right, but you just can't move on" - the attraction is undeniable, even though it may not be logical.
Overall, "Puzzle Pieces" is a thoughtful exploration of what it means to be attracted to someone despite their flaws. It acknowledges the difficulties that arise when someone is trying to fit in with societal expectations while also grappling with their own feelings. The jigsaw puzzle metaphor is a powerful image for these difficulties, encapsulating the idea that sometimes things just don't seem to fit together, even when we desperately want them to.
