How Does It Feel to Be Free
Sally Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

How did it happen?
Where did we lose it?
The love we looked for so long
I'm sorry I called you
But it's the first night you see
How does it feel to be free?

How does it feel now?
To reach out for someone
And find there's nobody there
Is it weighing on you?
Cause it's sure killing me
Tell me how does it feel to be free?

Funny how love is so hard to find
And yet so easy to lose
Maybe in time this old heart of mine
Can learn to live without you

How did it happen?
When did we lose it?
The love we looked for so long
I'm sorry I called you
But I just have to see
How does it feel to be free?

I'm sorry I called you
But it's the first night you see

Now tell me
How does it feel to be free?

Overall Meaning

In the song "How Does It Feel to Be Free" by Sally's, the lyrics delve deep into the complexities of love, loss, and ultimately the desire for freedom. The singer reflects on the dissolution of a once-promising love that had been sought after for a long time. The opening lines - "How did it happen? Where did we lose it?" - convey a sense of confusion and bewilderment at how something that was once cherished could unravel so unexpectedly. The singer expresses regret for reaching out to the other person, acknowledging that it is the first night after the breakup and wondering about the sensation of newfound freedom. The repetition of the question "How does it feel to be free?" conveys a poignant sense of longing for liberation from the emotional weight of a broken relationship.

As the lyrics progress, the singer continues to grapple with the aftermath of the breakup, questioning how it feels to be alone and realizing the absence of the person they once reached out to. The juxtaposition of the empty space where someone used to be with the weight of their absence highlights the emotional toll that the separation has taken. The singer wonders if the other person is also feeling the impact of the breakup, suggesting a shared sense of pain and longing for what once was. This exploration of loneliness and longing conveys a sense of vulnerability and introspection, as the singer seeks to understand the emotional implications of their newfound freedom.

The lyrics touch on the paradoxical nature of love - its elusiveness in finding and its fragility in losing. The singer reflects on the difficulty of finding love, juxtaposed with the ease with which it can be lost. This reflection hints at the bittersweet reality of relationships, where the potential for joy and connection is often balanced by the risk of heartbreak and loss. The singer contemplates the possibility of moving forward and learning to live without the other person, suggesting a glimmer of hope for healing and growth in the face of adversity.

In the closing verses, the singer once again apologizes for reaching out to the other person but expresses a need to understand how it feels to be free. The repetition of the question serves as a powerful refrain that encapsulates the central theme of the song - a yearning for release from the emotional entanglements of a past relationship. The poignant exploration of love, loss, and freedom in these lyrics invites listeners to reflect on their own experiences of heartbreak and resilience, resonating with the universal quest for emotional independence and self-discovery.

I don’t think you understand how IMPORTANT THIS SPEECH IS!!!
Sally field was a tv star for many years and became know for her role as the flying nun.
For years she tried to expand her career , but she could not get any serious roles in movies because all people saw because people would see her as “the flying nun”
When she was finally nominated for her first Oscar, she was still seen as a tv star, a lower class entertainer who only could do comedy. That year she won, but was still seen as a “ only tv comedy actress” who happened to win an Oscar.
It wasn’t until this year that she truly felt appreciated by the industry and proved that comedic actress can be as good and as talented as any other “serious” actress.
And this still happens today. many tv actors and actresses who are extremely talented, cant get roles in movies because they are seen as a b list talent.

This is one of the most honest acceptance speeches in Oscar History. How many phony speeches have we heard? I love Sally Field. She is an American Treasure.
