Inch'Allah
Salvatore Adamo Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ho visto l'oriente nel suo scrigno
Con la luna per bandiera
Ed intendevo in qualche verso
Cantare al mondo il suo splendore

Ma quando ho visto Gerusalemme
Piccolo fiore sulla roccia
Ho sentito come un requiem
Quando a parlargli mi inchinai

E mentre tu bianca chiesetta

Inch'Allah - Inch'Allah
Se Dio vuole - Inch'Allah

L'ulivo piange la sua ombra
Sua dolce sposa dolce amica
Che riposa sulle rovine
Prigioniera in terra nemica

Sul filo spinato con amore
La farfalla ammira la rosa
La gente così scervellata
Che la ripudia se mai posa

Dio del inferno Dio del cielo
Tu che governi tutto il mondo
Su questa terra d'Israele
Ci sono bimbi che tremano

Inch'Allah Inch'Allah
Se Dio vuole Inch'Allah

Le donne cadono sotto il tuono
Domani il sangue sarà lavato
La strada e fatta di coraggio
Una donna per una pietra

Ma sì ho visto Gerusalemme
Piccolo fiore sulla roccia
E sento sempre come un requiem
Quando a parlagli mi ritrovo

Requiem per sei milioni d'anime
Che non hanno il mausoleo di marmo
E che malgrado la sabbia infame
Hanno fatto crescere sei milioni d'alberi

Inch'Allah - Inch'Allah
Se Dio vuole - Inch'Allah

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of the song "Inch'Allah" by Salvatore Adamo narrate his experience travelling to the Middle East and encountering various poignant moments. The lyrics describe his aspirations of singing about the orient's beauty and his visit to Jerusalem, a small flower on a rock, which makes him feel like he is listening to a requiem. He acknowledges the tranquility of the white church's whispers of peace, but the sky rips apart like a veil revealing the cries of a weeping nation. Adamo also describes a scene of a path leading to a fountain, but the harsh reality is highlighted by the plight of a woman named Maria Maddalena, whose body is not even worth water. The song also references the olive tree, symbolizing peace and love, but it is mourning its shadow and its wife, who is imprisoned in enemy lands.

The lyrics also address the harsh realities faced by people living in Israel, where children are trembling in fear, and women are falling under the thunder, with bloodshed becoming inevitable. Salvatore Adamo also invokes the horrors of the Holocaust by mentioning "requiem for six million souls," whose graves are not adorned with marble mausoleums. The song concludes with the lines "Inch'Allah - Inch'Allah/Se Dio vuole - Inch'Allah,” which means "If Allah (God) wills” and emphasizes the powerlessness of human beings in the vast scheme of things.

I saw the East in its case

with the moon for a banner

and I counted on a quatrain in which

to sing it's light to the world.

But when I saw Jerusalem

a poppy on a rock

I heard a requiem

when I leant over it.

Don't you see, humble chapel,

you who whisper "Peace on Earth."

That the birds hide with their wings

these fiery letters: "Danger: frontier."?

The path leads to the fountain

you may want to refill your bucket.

Stop there, Mary-Magdalen,

for them, your body is worth less than the water.

God willing, God willing, God willing, God willing

And the olive tree mourns its shadow,

its tender spouse, its friend,

who lie beneath the rubble,

prisoners in enemy territory.

On the spike of barbed wire

the butterfly lies in wait for the rose;

the people are so scatter-brained

that they will reject me, if I dare.

God of hell or God of heaven

you who are where to you it seems good

in this land of Israel

there are children trembling.

God willing, God willing, God willing, God willing

The women fall under the storm.

Tomorrow the blood will be washed away.

The road is made with courage,

one woman for one paving stone.

But of course, I've seen Jerusalem

a poppy on a rock

I always hear a requiem

while I am leant over it.

Requiem for six million souls

who don''t have their marble mausoleum

and who, in spite of the infamous sand,

have made six million trees grow.

God willing, God willing, God willing, God willing43
