Johnny B. Goode [live In Japan
Santana Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Deep down louisiana close to new orleans
Way back up in the woods among the evergreens
There stood a log cabin made of earth and wood
Where lived a country boy name of johnny b. Goode
He never ever learned to read or write so well
But he could play the guitar like ringing a bell

Go go
Go Johnny go
Go Johnny go Go go
Go Johnny go go go
Go Johnny go
Go, Johnny b. Goode

He use to carry his guitar in a gunny sack
And sit beneath the trees by the railroad track
Oh, the engineers used to see him sitting in the shade
Playing to the rhythm that the drivers made
People passing by would stop and say
Oh my that little country boy could play

Go go
Go Johnny go
Go Johnny go
Go, go Johnny go
Go, go johnny go
Go, Johnny b. Goode

His mama told him someday he would be a man
And he would be the leader of a big old band
Many people coming from miles around
To hear him play his music when the sun go down
Maybe someday his name would be in lights
Saying johnny b. Goode tonight

Go go
Go Johnny go
Go Johnny go
Go Johnny go
Go Johnny go
Go Johnny b. Goode

His mama told him someday he would be a man
And he would be the leader of a big old band
Many people coming from miles around
To hear him play his music when the sun go down
Maybe someday his name would be in lights
Saying johnny b. Goode tonight

Go go
Go Johnny go
Go Johnny go
Go Johnny go

Go Johnny go
Go. go, go, go Johnny b. Goode

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Santana's song "Johnny B. Goode" tell the story of a talented, yet uneducated guitar player from Louisiana who has a passion for music. Despite his inability to read or write very well, Johnny B. Goode is able to connect with his audience through his guitar playing, which is described as "ringing a bell." He is admired by many and often draws a crowd when he plays beneath the trees by the railroad tracks. His mother has high hopes for him to become a successful musician, and the song suggests that his talent will eventually lead him to fame and fortune.

This song, originally written and performed by Chuck Berry in 1958, has become a classic rock and roll anthem over the decades. Santana's live version of the song, recorded in Japan, features a lengthy guitar solo that showcases the band's musical talent. The lyrics of the song have resonated with audiences for years, and many people have interpreted the story of Johnny B. Goode as a metaphor for the American dream.

One interesting fact about this song is that it was inspired by Berry's own experiences as a musician. He grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, and often played in local clubs and bars as a teenager. Like Johnny B. Goode, Berry had a talent for guitar playing but struggled with reading and writing. He eventually became one of the most successful musicians of his time.

Another interesting fact is that "Johnny B. Goode" has been covered by many other artists over the years, including Jimi Hendrix, AC/DC, and Grateful Dead. It has also been featured in movies and TV shows, such as "Back to the Future" and "The Sopranos."

Overall, the lyrics of Santana's "Johnny B. Goode" tell a timeless story of a musician with a passion for his craft. The song's catchy melody and guitar solos have made it a fan favorite for many years.

There is absolutely NO EXCUSE for Brian Setzer not being in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The guy exudes more "rock n roll" in one song that most inductees have achieved in a lifetime.

@golfhound

the R n R hall of shame is a joke. Stray Cats' legacy is doing just fine without such nonsense. It took forever for that voting body of bozos to admit many bands into their hall of shame. Led Zeppelin wasn't admitted until 1995. Rush didn't make it until 2013. Both bands will be listened to and studied a hundred years from now.

@spmoran4703

Hes too good for that place . They have ABBA. But no Brian . Or Steve Mariott one of the best rock vocalists ever. To a certain extent it's the hall of shame .

@spmoran4703

Brian is one of the people keeping Old style hard rock , Rockabilly and guitar blues alive and kicking . Hes a underated musician and he really shouldnt be .

@user-em2kz7hc6p

Brian Setzer might be the best guitarist on the planet. With a strong and clear voice. And, and, and...

@straymouse

What a perfect rendition!!
Brian Setzer is a real genius.

@AMac-qd6ft

I get a lot of weird looks from other musicians when I tell them he's one of my top 3 guitarists. It surprised me too, but his phrasing, dynamics and improv skills are second to none. They're just buried in a niche genre sound that most squares consider "kitsch" or "novelty" music.

@rhodriwilliams1014

I agree, I think he's one of the most underrated guitarists out there.

@DerredmaxTRIAX

Agreed 100%

@jimeiden2360

It takes a lot to carry a 3 piece rockabilly band. The guitar has to cover for lead and rhythm guitar and takes a lot of practice and skill to carry it off. He's very accomplished and it shows.
