In February 2009, she officially changed her stage name to Santigold as a result of infomercial jeweller Santo Gold threatening legal action against White and her label Downtown Records.
White was lead singer of the Philadelphia-based punk rock band Stiffed, but while in the band, she was offered a solo contract. Working with fellow Stiffed member John Hill as co-producer, she recorded her debut album, Santogold, which was released in April 2008. Upon the change of her stage name, her label Downtown Records issued this press release:
"Change the graffiti on the bathroom wall, get your tattoo fixed, get your T-shirt airbrushed and change the name on your year-end list: Santogold is now Santigold. She's not telling you why, that's just how it is."

Santigold
Listen to your heart, now you hear me say
Come find my mind if you tryna be with me
Can't stay, no time for talking, I don't hear you, babe
Just walk away now
It's a wonder when chatter
Can't share my space for walking, got some place to be
I don't care about your money, clout, head
You can keep your cat call and get out of my way
Who are you, you, you?
Telling me to smile some way
Thinking you, you, you
Got a shot, it's hopeless baby
Do you coo coo coo if you want me?
You don't want no love
Baby, coo coo if you wanna
I don't hear you boy
Do you coo coo coo if you want me?
You don't want no love
Baby, coo coo if you wanna
I don't hear you boy
Holler with your heart, babe, holler with your heart
Holler with your heart, babe, holler with your heart
I don't know somtimes
I be here downtown and I see your face
Thought I caught that smile today
Over here, no harm just to look my way
So sincere how asked if I had time to talk
And then you brought me cake
Laughing out loud
Another fool come by, interrupts
When he open his mouth I say
Who are you, you, you?
Telling me to smile some way
Thinking you, you, you
Got a shot, it's hopeless baby
Do you coo coo coo if you want me?
You don't want no love
Baby, coo coo if you wanna
I don't hear you boy
Do you coo coo coo if you want me?
You don't want no love
Baby, coo coo if you wanna
I don't hear you boy
Holler with your heart, babe, holler with your heart
Holler with your heart, babe, holler with your heart
I just want some real love, just like on TV
Nobody ever walking by really looks at me
All them ogle all day long like they're keeping score
But if you love me, tell you what, I will love you more
Do you coo coo coo if you want me?
You don't want no love
Baby, coo coo if you wanna
I don't hear you boy
Do you coo coo coo if you want me?
You don't want no love
Baby, coo coo if you wanna
I don't hear you boy
Holler with your heart, babe, holler with your heart
Holler with your heart, babe, holler with your heart
Holler with your heart, babe, holler with your heart
Holler with your heart, babe, holler with your heart
Don't you coo coo if you want me? Tell me
Don't you coo coo if you want me? Tell me
Don't you coo coo if you want me? Tell me
(Don't you coo coo if you want me?) Santigold
In Santigold's song "Coo Coo Coo," the lyrics delve into themes of autonomy, self-worth, and the importance of genuine connections in relationships. The song opens with a call to listen to one's heart, emphasizing the need to stay true to oneself and not be swayed by superficial attractions or distractions. The singer asserts their independence and unwillingness to be controlled by external pressures, dismissing those who try to impose their influence or expectations.
The chorus of "Do you coo coo coo if you want me?" serves as a refrain questioning the sincerity of others' affections. The repetition of the phrase highlights a sense of skepticism towards shallow expressions of love or desire, suggesting a desire for deeper, authentic connections. The refusal to engage with insincere advances underscores the singer's resolve to prioritize genuine emotional connections over empty gestures.
The lyrics also touch on the challenges of navigating social interactions, particularly in a world where superficiality and insincerity often prevail. The singer expresses a longing for real love, contrasting the performative nature of relationships portrayed in media with the lack of genuine connection in their own experiences. This yearning for authenticity is juxtaposed with the constant scrutiny and objectification they face from others, highlighting the discrepancy between surface-level attraction and meaningful emotional bonds.
Overall, "Coo Coo Coo" conveys a message of self-assurance and the importance of valuing one's own worth and integrity in relationships. The lyrics advocate for honest communication, genuine emotional investment, and the courage to reject superficiality in favor of authentic connection. By asserting boundaries, refusing to settle for insincere affections, and prioritizing true love over fleeting attraction, the song encourages listeners to listen to their hearts, stay true to themselves, and seek relationships built on mutual respect and genuine affection.
