In February 2009, she officially changed her stage name to Santigold as a result of infomercial jeweller Santo Gold threatening legal action against White and her label Downtown Records.
White was lead singer of the Philadelphia-based punk rock band Stiffed, but while in the band, she was offered a solo contract. Working with fellow Stiffed member John Hill as co-producer, she recorded her debut album, Santogold, which was released in April 2008. Upon the change of her stage name, her label Downtown Records issued this press release:
"Change the graffiti on the bathroom wall, get your tattoo fixed, get your T-shirt airbrushed and change the name on your year-end list: Santogold is now Santigold. She's not telling you why, that's just how it is."
Gold Fire

If I couldn't see no way?
Dare I bore you?
I'd come for you
And rally you, I'd say
Let's go forward
Fuel my fire
We find our way through
I'ma do my thing
I'ma run a ring 'round their nothing
Walkin' that line, it feel like an earthquake
Got me hemmed in but I'm hard to break
Gold fire (ah)
Can't taunt me with your water (ah)
Gold fire (ah)
Incitin' the disorder (ah)
Burning through your borders
Oh you make me see
Ain't nothing what it seems to be
I'm not frettin' anything you say
It doesn't mean a thing to me
I'll keep telling you until you get it
Always sincere, are you not ready yet?
Locked down in the cell of your head
Got me outta bounds I care too much
I'm a do my
I'm a do my thing
I'm ' run a ring 'round your nothing
Walkin' that line, it feel like an earthquake
Got me hemmed in but I'm hard to break
Gold fire (ah)
Can't taunt me with your water (ah)
Gold fire (ah)
Incitin' the disorder (ah)
Burning through your borders
Gold fire (ah)
Can't taunt me with your water (ah)
Gold fire (ah)
Incitin' the disorder (ah)
Burning through your borders
Oh you make me see
Ain't nothing what it seems to be
I'm not frettin' anything you say
It doesn't mean a thing to me
And my flames stay 'til you're clear out my way
And my flames stay 'til you're clear out my way
And my flames stay 'til you're clear out my way
(There's a lie in the water)
And my flames stay 'til you're clear out my way
(There's a hand in the handouts)
And my flames stay 'til you're clear out my way
(There's a lie in the water)
And my flames stay 'til you're clear out my way
(There's a hand in the handouts)
And my flames stay 'til you're clear out my way
The lyrics of Santigold's song "Gold Fire" convey a sense of determination, empowerment, and resilience in the face of challenges and external influences. The opening lines question whether the singer would divulge information if they felt there was no solution in sight, while also pondering if their presence might bore the listener. Despite these uncertainties, the singer asserts their commitment to supporting and motivating the listener to move forward, urging them to overcome obstacles and find their way through difficulties.
The recurring motif of "Gold Fire" symbolizes a powerful and unyielding force that cannot be easily extinguished or manipulated. The singer refuses to be deterred by taunts or attempts to disrupt their sense of purpose, instead using the fire within them to push through boundaries and incite change. The imagery of fire burning through borders suggests a breaking free from limitations and constraints, embracing a sense of liberation and self-discovery.
The lyrics also touch upon the theme of perception versus reality, with the singer acknowledging that things are not always as they appear to be. They remain unfazed by external opinions or attempts to undermine their confidence, emphasizing their unwavering commitment to staying true to themselves and their goals. The repetition of asserting one's independence and determination to do things their way reinforces a sense of agency and self-assurance in the face of adversity.
In the closing verses, the singer emphasizes the persistence of their inner fire, vowing to maintain their resolve until obstacles are cleared from their path. The references to lies in the water and hands in handouts suggest a skepticism towards external influences and a refusal to be swayed by deceit or false promises. The overall message of the song appears to be one of self-empowerment, resilience, and staying true to oneself in the face of challenges and attempts to disrupt one's journey.
