In February 2009, she officially changed her stage name to Santigold as a result of infomercial jeweller Santo Gold threatening legal action against White and her label Downtown Records.
White was lead singer of the Philadelphia-based punk rock band Stiffed, but while in the band, she was offered a solo contract. Working with fellow Stiffed member John Hill as co-producer, she recorded her debut album, Santogold, which was released in April 2008. Upon the change of her stage name, her label Downtown Records issued this press release:
"Change the graffiti on the bathroom wall, get your tattoo fixed, get your T-shirt airbrushed and change the name on your year-end list: Santogold is now Santigold. She's not telling you why, that's just how it is."
Say A-ha

Louder than they
Louder than they
Allow, allow
Louder than they
Louder than they
Louder than they
Allow, allow
Say Aha, aha
At night it's eating up your head,
Backed against the wall
Got you in a tight place
Though you're not alone at all
Been fighting, trying to place a name on what it's called
Make you feel like a losing streak cause you know
But you're not involved
Louder than they
Louder than they
Louder than they
Allow, allow
Louder than they
Louder than they
Louder than they
Allow, allow
Say Aha, Aha
Say Aha, aha
It's alright, cause everything they say
Doesn't make no sense
It's that time
I'm picking up my ass
Up from off the fence
Gonna blow a hole in this charade
It's self defense
I'm a army got a whole brigade in my two sense
Louder than they
Louder than they
Louder than they
Allow, allow
Louder than they
Louder than they
Louder than they
Allow, allow
Say Aha, Aha
Say Aha, aha
Oh
Send in your torpedoes for all they know
Make a show, shake them up before you blow
Cause they don't want no cure
No, you'd better find a way
Their aims not pure
Louder than they
Louder than they
Louder than they
Allow, allow
Louder than they
Louder than they
Louder than they
Allow, allow
Say Aha, Aha
Say Aha, aha
The song "Say Aha" by Santigold is a bold and empowering anthem that encourages listeners to speak up and let their voices be heard. The repeating lyric "Louder than they allow" suggests that there are outside forces trying to stifle and silence the individual, but the singer urges them to be louder than those forces allow. In the verses, the lyrics describe a feeling of being trapped and backed into a corner, but ultimately not alone in that struggle. The lines "Make you feel like a losing streak cause you know, but you're not involved" suggest that there may be a sense of being falsely accused or blamed for something that you had no control over. The chorus encourages the listener to say "Aha," a word that can mean a sudden realization or understanding, as if to say that speaking up and taking action can lead to a breakthrough moment of clarity.
The second verse continues the theme of taking action and not being passive in the face of oppression or injustice. The line "Gonna blow a hole in this charade, it's self-defense" suggests that to remain silent or complacent is to allow oneself to be taken advantage of or used as a pawn. The use of the phrase "self-defense" adds a layer of urgency and importance to the idea of speaking up and fighting back. The final lines of the song suggest that there is a larger systemic issue at play, with "aims not pure" and an unwillingness to accept a "cure." The use of the word "torpedoes" implies a sense of warfare or fighting back against an enemy.
Overall, the lyrics of "Say Aha" encourage listeners to find their voice and use it to speak out against injustice and oppression. The repetition of the phrase "Louder than they allow" reinforces the idea that there are external forces trying to silence individuals, but that those individuals have the power to break free from that oppression.
