Who I Thought You Were
Santigold Lyrics

Hey now take a look at you
Hosed down in your million dollar suit
But I knew you when that wasn't you
I knew you when you had a clue
Big man, driving a big car
Funny how you can spin so fast so far
I knew you when you was a star
I knew when no one thought you were

You cannot be who I thought you were
Who I thought you were
No, you can't be who I thought you were
Who I thought you were
I like you more when you're poorer
Your new ID is a borer
Come back here you actin' like we owe ya
Are you ever gonna be who I thought you were?

Last time I tried to call you up
I couldn't reach you 'cause you were stuck so far up
I knew you when you were just rude
I knew I loved your attitude
Five minutes all that you got left
Long way down boy I wouldn't hold your breath
I knew you when you knew the time
I knew you for your bottom line

You cannot be who I thought you were
Who I thought you were
No, you can't be who I thought you were
Who I thought you were
I like you more when you're poorer
Your new ID is a borer
Come back here you actin' like we owe ya
Are you ever gonna be who I thought you were?

Now you got a lot of gall
Tell you frankly I'm appalled
I know you know better where you going on that ladder?
Got all the girls runnin' they with you
All of your lackeys they're thirsty and you are too
Your enemies they tell you it's all fine (all fine)
I tell you better watch it walkin' a thin line (a thin line)
Ask if I used to know you I don't know (I don't know)
'Cause these days it's like it's just like I never seen your face before (before)

You cannot be who I thought you were
Who I thought you were
No, you can't be who I thought you were
Who I thought you were
I like you more when you're poorer
Your new ID is a borer
Come back here you actin' like we owe ya
Are you ever gonna be who I thought you were?

Who I thought you were (I don't like you)
Who I thought you were (I don't like you)

Who I thought you were (I don't like you)

Overall Meaning

"Santigold's song 'Who I Thought You Were' explores the disappointment and disillusionment that can come from someone changing their identity and losing touch with their true self. The lyrics depict a person who has achieved success and wealth, portraying themselves as someone they were not before. The singer, who had known and appreciated the individual in their earlier form, now finds themselves disenchanted and unable to reconcile the person they thought they knew with the person they have become.

The opening lines convey this stark contrast, as the person is described as being "hosed down in [their] million dollar suit," highlighting their newfound wealth and status. The singer reminisces about a time when this person "had a clue" and "was a star," implying that the individual has lost touch with their authentic self and succumbed to superficiality. The chorus emphasizes the singer's resignation and frustration, stating that the person cannot be who they thought they were, expressing a longing for the genuine connection they once shared.

The second verse reveals further disappointment, as the singer recounts their failed attempts to reach out to the person. The individual has become so self-absorbed and distant that they are described as being "stuck so far up," signifying their detachment from reality. The singer fondly remembers the person's rude attitude and asserts that they loved it, highlighting the shift from authenticity to a more pretentious demeanor. The final verse intensifies the critique, questioning the person's moral compass and the company they keep. The singer warns of the consequences of their actions and the slippery slope they are navigating, suggesting that the person's true character may be irretrievable.

Overall, 'Who I Thought You Were' explores the theme of authenticity, the dangers of losing oneself to external validation, and the disappointment that arises when someone we thought we knew transforms into someone unrecognizable."

This is the most upbeat & melodic diss track I've ever heard.

LCola1967

Discovered this tune when I was shopping at Kirkland's. I was at the check-out counter and had to pause to find it on YouTube.  I love this - it's got a totally 80's vibe; very catchy and makes me just wanna get up and dance!
