El Relicario
Sara Montiel Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Un día de San Eugenio
yendo hacia el prado le conocí
era el torero de más tronio
y el más castizo de to Madrid.

Iba en calesa
pidiendo guerra
y yo al mirarlo
me estremeci.

Y el al notarlo
bajo del coche
y muy garboso
se vino a mi.

Tiro la capa
con gesto altivo
y descubriendose
me dijo asi:

Pisa morena
pisa con garbo
que un relicario
que un relicario me voy hacer
con el trocito de mi capote
que haya pasado
que haya pisado tan lindo pie.

Un lunes abrileño el toreaba
y a verlo fui
nunca lo hiciera que aquella tarde
de sentimiento crei morir.

Al dar un lance
cayo en la arena
se sintio herido
miró hacia mi.

Y un relicario
saco del pecho
que yo enseguida
reconoci.

Cuando el torero
caia inerte
en su delirio
decia asi:

Pisa morena
pisa con garbo
que un relicario
que un relicario me voy hacer
con el trocito de mi capote

que haya pasado
que haya pisado tan lindo pie.

Overall Meaning

The song El Relicario by Sara Montiel tells the story of a woman's encounter with a flamboyant and traditional bullfighter in Madrid. One day during San Eugenio festivities, the woman meets the torero who is riding in a carriage, asking for a fight. She admits that she was moved by his appearance, and he in turn was captivated by her beauty. He dismounts his carriage, throws his cape around him, and approaches her gallantly. He makes a bold proposal, where he asks her to walk on his cape, promising to keep a piece of it as a cherished relicario that he will treasure forever.

The song then progresses to a scene where the woman witnessed the torero's vulnerability and his ultimate demise. This event was during a bullfight, where the torero fell to the ground, facing near death. But in his final moments, he remembered the relicario and asked the woman one last time that she walks on his cape so he may forever keep her as his cherished relicario. The song is a poignant tribute to a proud and passionate Spanish tradition and highlights the emotional connections and respect between the bullfighter and the lady.
