His EP "Go" was released in 2004; he released an album "Scream" in 2005, which was followed by the release of "Shine" in 2007.
"I had been wanting to do this for a long time," Bettens has said of his solo career. "It's a whole new challenge, and it kind of makes me feel like it's my first record. Everything has a new level of excitement to it, especially touring."
In the summer of 2006, Bettens played several of the summer's biggest European festivals, in front of crowds of more than 20,000 people. Gigging with new musicians, Bettens was thrilled with the reaction from fans. "The shows were amazing," said Bettens. "The K's Choice fans were really excited that I'm doing something different, and people who didn't know me from Ks Choice really responded to the new songs. It was way beyond my expectations."
The new songs that Bettens has written as a solo artist have also surpassed his expectations. As part of K's Choice, Bettens wrote songs with a certain sound in mind. Now, on his own, he feels more able to explore himself as an artist, taking risks and blending pop, rock and folk to create a new radio-ready sound that goes beyond anything he had done before.
Bettens takes a chance with his lyrics as well, taking a political stance and tackling issues that are important to young people everywhere. The first single from Scream, "Not Insane", has been described by Bettens as a mini-protest song, attacking people who cannot tolerate others who are different or who live alternative lifestyles.
The spirited songwriter's desire to take risks is also evident in Scream's title track. "I'd been working on these two songs, and I was really happy with the verses on one but the chorus wasn't happening. And it was just the opposite with the other - the chorus rocked, but I didn't like the verses." Bettens took the verses from the first song and combined them with the chorus from the second to create a quirky song that boasts a sense of urgency. The experiment worked just like his solo career.
One Second

Or comes to life
When water shines in yellow light
When something moves
Inside a tree
I wish you saw things just like me
When I walk around
And I feel my feet as they touch the ground
And I'm happy just to be right there
I wish that I could somehow share
The thing my stomach does when I think of us
What if we had one second to be?
Just like the other what would we see?
What if you knew exactly what you are to me?
Would you be terribly surprised?
To see who I am in my actual size
A second is short, but more then enough
You would feel loved, you would feel loved
What you hear, when music sings
What makes you sad, what sadness brings
Do you feel empty when you cry?
If I could only find out why you fear the things you fear
And make it disappear
What if we had one second to be?
Just like the other what would we see?
What if you knew exactly what you are to me?
Would you be terribly surprised?
To see who I am in my actual size
A second is short, but more then enough
You would feel loved, you would feel loved
What if we had one second to be?
Just like the other what would we see?
What if you knew exactly what you are to me?
Would you be terribly surprised?
To see who I am in my actual size
A second is short, but more then enough
You would feel loved, you would feel loved
You would feel loved, you would feel loved
You would feel loved, you would feel loved
In Sarah Bettens's song "One Second," the lyrics explore the desire for deeper understanding and connection with another person. The first verse presents images of nature and the world around us, suggesting that the singer is attuned to the beauty and complexities of life. The second verse reflects on the singer's own sense of self and the joy of being present in the moment, wanting desperately to share that feeling with someone who may not see things in the same way. Throughout the song, the repeated refrain, "What if we had one second to be?" asks us to imagine a world where we could communicate our true feelings and emotions to others in an instant, to be truly seen and understood without the veil of miscommunication that often comes with human interaction.
The song's chorus reinforces this idea of connection superseding language or time, suggesting that even the briefest encounter with a person who truly understands and loves us would be enough to make us feel whole. The final lines of the song repeat this message like a mantra: "You would feel loved, you would feel loved."
Overall, "One Second" is a heartfelt ode to the kind of genuine human connection that can sometimes feel elusive, even impossible. It encourages us to be open, vulnerable, and honest with the people in our lives, and to never give up on the hope of finding a deep and abiding bond with another person.
