Ben's Song
Sarah McLachlan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

On the hills of fire, the darkest hour
I was dreaming of my true love's power
Who will bring a light to stoke the fire
Fear not, for you're still breathing

On a winter's day
I saw a life blood drained away
A cold wind blows on a windless day

Hear the cry for new life, the morning's flame
You were the brightest light
That burned too soon in vain
Who will bring you back
From where there's no return
Fear not for you just dreaming

On a winter's day
I saw the life blood drained away
A cold wind blows on a windless day
On a windless day

On a windless day
Ah

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sarah McLachlan's song "Ben's Song" are an emotional and bittersweet exploration of loss, grief, and hope. The first verse begins with the singer deeply immersed in a state of despair, describing the "darkest hour" and dreaming of their loved one's power to bring light to their life. The lyrics then turn to a more hopeful tone, reassuring the listener not to give up as they are still breathing.

The second verse describes a winter's day where the singer saw life drain away, but despite the cold wind blowing on a windless day, there is still hope for new life and the morning's flame. The chorus reflects on the loss of a bright light that burned too soon in vain, asking who can bring the loved one back from where there is no return - but ultimately, the lyrics affirm that there is no need to fear, for their loved one is still dreaming.

Overall, "Ben's Song" paints a heart-wrenching picture of grief and loss, but ultimately offers hope and the promise of new beginnings through the morning's flame.

I've had this album since it came out, and this song still brings me to tears every time I hear it. A song of catharsis for me. Being a guy, you know, with all those pent up emotions, it's a good release.

I think Sarah has more songs that have made me cry than any other artist (and it's not a bad thing) - she has a way of touching my soul & tapping my emotions! This was the first song of hers to do that to me...still does.
