Sarah McLachlan Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And looks as far as she can see
And draws each breath as if it were the last
And wipes away the tears across her sleeve
She can see where the river crawls to the sea
Like a baby into mother's care
Somehow the longing's so far away
And look at the child
With the dream in her eyes
Holding it deep inside her
Home, home
So much anger, so deeply ingrained
Seemed a burden that was hers alone
She didn't think that there was anything wrong
In wanting a life that she could call her own
How could I explain? You would not want to hear
You wouldn't listen if I talked anyway
For you were too weighed down by your own fears
Look at the child with the dream in her eyes
Holding it deep inside
Home, home, home, home
The song "Home" by Sarah McLachlan portrays a young child who is in search of a place she can call home. As she stands by the river, she takes in the moment, drawing each breath as if it were the last, and wiping away tears across her sleeve. The child observes the river and how it crawls into the sea like a baby into its mother's care. However, despite the peaceful scene before her, somehow, the child's longing for something beyond is so far away, as if her innocence was taken away or wasted.
The child is holding onto a dream deep within her, while anger is deeply ingrained in her. She feels burdened, and it seems that her struggles are hers alone. The child just wants a life she can call her own, but she feels that no one would listen to her even if she were to share her feelings. The song is a perfect depiction of those who feel lost and out of place, searching for a place to call home, be it a physical home or a sense of belonging.
