Into the Fire
Sarah McLachlan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Mother teach me to walk again
Milk and honey so intoxicating

[Chorus]
And into the fire
I'm reunited
Into the fire
I am the spark
Into the night
I yearn for comfort

Open the doors that lead on into Eden
Don't you disguise
I'll follow the signs marked back to the beginning
No more compromise

[Chorus]

Free the water that carries me to the sea
You I see as my security

Into the fire
I'm reunited
Into the fire
Oh, I am the spark
Into the night
I yearn for comfort

I will stare into the sun until its light doesn't blind me
I will walk unto the fire until its heat doesn't burn me
And I will feed the fire

[Chorus]

Into the fire
Into the fire
Into the fire
I'm reunited
Into the fire
Oh, I am the spark
Into the night
I yearn for comfort
Into the fire
Into the fire
Into the fire
I'm reunited
Into the fire
I am the spark

Into the night
I yearn for comfort

Overall Meaning

The song "Into the Fire" by Sarah McLachlan is a powerful, poignant anthem about rebirth, renewal, and redemption. The opening line of the song, "Mother teach me to walk again," is a clear indication that the singer is seeking guidance and support during a difficult and uncertain time. The imagery of milk and honey being intoxicating further reinforces the idea of comfort and sustenance.

The chorus of the song, "Into the fire I'm reunited, into the fire I am the spark, into the night I yearn for comfort," speaks to the idea of facing one's fears head-on and using them to fuel personal growth and transformation. The repetition of "into the fire" underscores this idea of facing the unknown and coming out stronger on the other side.

The second verse of the song, "Open the doors that lead on into Eden, don't you disguise, I'll follow the signs marked back to the beginning, no more compromise," suggests that the singer is ready to let go of past hurt and mistakes and embrace a new path forward. The use of the word "Eden" also hints at a spiritual or religious theme.

The first time I saw this video in the early 90s, I was so mesmerized with the beautiful video and music. After 25 years, I'm still feeling the same again watching and hearing this. This has got to be my most favourite of Sarah McLachlan, even though she made very good music afterwards. I must have watched this already over 20 times.

Hello Skinny

Great
