Lost
Sarah McLachlan Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
I move away from the crowded room
That sea of shallow faces masked in warm regret
They don't know how to feel they don't know what is lost
[Chorus]
Oh
Lost in the darkness of a land
Memories of being taken by the hand
And we are led into the sun
But I don't have a hold on what is real
Though we can only dry
What is there to give or to believe
I want it all to go away I want to be alone
Sympathys wasted on my hollow shell
I feel there is nothing left to fight for
No reason for a cause
And I can't hear your voice and I can't feel you near
[Chorus]
I wanted a change knowing all I could do was try
I was looking for someone
to make my heart alive
In Sarah McLachlan's song Lost, the singer seems to be struggling with feelings of isolation and despair. In the first verse, she describes moving away from a crowded room filled with people who don't understand her or know what she has lost. The second verse continues this sense of loneliness, with the singer longing to be alone and feeling like there is nothing left to fight for. The chorus offers a glimmer of hope, with imagery of being led into the sun, but ultimately ends on a note of uncertainty, with the singer unable to grasp what is real or meaningful.
The lyrics of the song are haunting and emotional, and it's clear that McLachlan was drawing from her own experiences and emotions when she wrote them. The song has become a fan favorite and is often cited as one of her most powerful and moving works.
