Plenty
Sarah McLachlan Lyrics

They told me plenty
I already knew
You never felt a thing
So soon forgotten all that you do
In more than words, I
Tried to tell you
The more I tried, I failed
I would not let myself believe
That you might stray
And I would stand by you
No matter what they'd say
I would have thought I'd be with you
Until my dying day
Until my dying day
I used to think my life
Was often empty
A lonely space to fill
You hurt me more than
I ever would have imagined
You made my world stand still
And in that stillness
There was a freedom
I never felt before
I would not let myself believe
That you might stray
And I would stand by you
No matter what they'd say
I would have thought I'd be with you
Until my dying day
Until my dying day
The lyrics of "Plenty" by Sarah McLachlan speak to the heartbreak of realizing that a romantic partner has been unfaithful. The singer of the song has looked into the eyes of their partner and "they told me plenty," revealing that the partner has not been emotionally invested in the relationship. Despite this, the singer has tried to express their feelings through words, but ultimately failed. The realization of the partner's infidelity has caused intense pain, making the singer's life feel empty and lonely. However, in this pain, the singer found freedom and a sense of stillness that had eluded them before.
The chorus is particularly striking, with the singer admitting that they never believed that their partner could stray but also stating that they would stand by them no matter what. This speaks to the complicated emotions that can arise when learning of infidelity - the desire to hold on to the relationship despite the betrayal. Overall, the song is a poignant reflection on love, heartbreak, and the unexpected places we can find strength.
