The band first reached substantial commercial success with its third studio album Fight for the Rock (1986), which peaked at number 158 on the Billboard 200. Its next four albums—Hall of the Mountain King (1987), Gutter Ballet (1989), Streets: A Rock Opera (1991) and Edge of Thorns (1993)—were also successful but more critically acclaimed than Fight for the Rock. On October 17, 1993, six months after the release of Edge of Thorns, guitarist Criss Oliva was killed in a car accident. Following his death, Jon (along with producer Paul O'Neill) decided to continue Savatage in memory of his brother. The band released four more studio albums, and went through several line-up changes before going on an extended hiatus in 2002. During the years—partly even before the hiatus—members founded various new bands such as Jon Oliva's Pain, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Circle II Circle and Doctor Butcher. On August 2, 2014, Savatage announced that they were reuniting for the 2015 Wacken Open Air; despite having discussed the possibility of more shows and new music, the band went on hiatus once again. Although Savatage technically remains inactive, half of the members of the band claimed in interviews during throughout 2020 and 2021 that they have been working on new material for a possible follow-up to Poets and Madmen (2001).

I'm not far away
I think of you
Somehow you drifted far away from me
I can't explain
In the dream
You're all I see
Is where I'll be
With no one by my side
The tears in my eyes
I dream of you
Could you ever feel the same
I think you can
In the dream
You're all I see
In the dream
Is where I'll be
In the dream
You're all I see
In the dream
Is where I'll be
In the dream
In the dream
In the dream
In the dream

In the dream
The lyrics of Savatage's "In the Dream" tell a story of a distant love that is reminisced through dreams. The song opens with the singer calling out their loved one's name, emphasizing the distance between them. The feeling of loss is palpable as the singer muses about the reasons for the separation, unable to explain the drifting apart.
However, the chorus brings a sliver of hope to their anguish, as the singer takes solace in their imagination, dreaming of being reunited with their beloved. The phrase "In the dream, you're all I see" is repeated throughout the song as a manifestation of the singer's longing, a longing that has consumed their dreams. The final lines of the song emphasize this longing through repetition, begging their love to stay in the dream a little longer.
Overall, "In the Dream" is a bittersweet love song, riddled with themes of distance, longing, and the power of dreams to offer solace in times of pain.

Savatage are ptobaly one of the best bands around. Incredible musicians. I wished they were still together.
Pure GM
They are still together, kind of. Founding member Jon Oliva has his band Trans Siberia orchestra. It's symphonic Metal Christmas music.
Christopher Pooler
Criss died in 1993, in case you didn’t know. A lot of young people are just now discovering the band. One of the best bands of all time. In the 1980’s they were at their peak and dominated shows. Most underrated band ever. Needed more Love. Th sure finally getting that imo. Deserves it decades ago.
