After forming under the name Sefler in 1994, Saves the Day signed with the independent hardcore punk label Equal Vision and released their debut studio album in 1998. It was followed by Through Being Cool (1999), which featured their first single, "Shoulder to the Wheel." Stay What You Are was released in 2001, peaking at number 100 on the Billboard 200. It spawned two successful music videos on MTV2, for the singles "At Your Funeral" and "Freakish", and has since sold 300,000 copies. After the success, Saves the Day signed to Dreamworks Records, who co-released their next studio album, In Reverie, with Vagrant Records. The album peaked at number 27 on the Billboard 200 and number 4 on the Independent Albums chart.

Saves the Day Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
'Cause I'm going to end it all in the light at the break of dawn
And I don't why or what went wrong
I'm tired of trying to pretend to believe that I can go on
[Chorus]
The pain won't let me get away
And now I know we'll never be the same
I don't want to live this way
I said the pain won't let me get away
I'm going to get my staples and a bottle of booze
I've got these skewers in my mouth now there's nothing else I can do
Except to run out naked in the road
Reaching up into the air
Got the taste of blood in my throat
[Chorus]
Oogacha, oogacha, oogacha, oogacha
Oogacha, oogacha, oogacha, oogacha
Oogacha, oogacha, oogacha, oogacha
[Chorus]
The lyrics to Saves the Day's song Getaway describe someone who is in extreme emotional and mental pain and has reached their breaking point. The singer declares that they do not need anyone else in their life because they have decided to end their suffering at the break of dawn. They acknowledge that they don't understand why things have gone wrong in their life and express their exhaustion from trying to pretend that they can continue living in pain.
The chorus builds upon the declaration of pain and suffering that the singer feels. They state that the pain will not let them "get away" and that they have come to the realization that things will never be the same. The singer declares that they don't want to live another day in this way, which emphasizes the level of anguish they are experiencing.
The second verse of the song seems to imply that the singer has attempted to self-harm in some way. They mention getting "staples," which could refer to staples used to close a wound, and a "bottle of booze," which could indicate alcohol as a form of self-medication. The line "I've got these skewers in my mouth now there's nothing else I can do" is especially unsettling and evocative of someone in deep distress. The singer then suggests that they may attempt to run out naked into the road and taste blood in their throat, which is a disturbing image of someone who has lost all sense of control.
