After forming under the name Sefler in 1994, Saves the Day signed with the independent hardcore punk label Equal Vision and released their debut studio album in 1998. It was followed by Through Being Cool (1999), which featured their first single, "Shoulder to the Wheel." Stay What You Are was released in 2001, peaking at number 100 on the Billboard 200. It spawned two successful music videos on MTV2, for the singles "At Your Funeral" and "Freakish", and has since sold 300,000 copies. After the success, Saves the Day signed to Dreamworks Records, who co-released their next studio album, In Reverie, with Vagrant Records. The album peaked at number 27 on the Billboard 200 and number 4 on the Independent Albums chart.

Where Are You
Saves the Day Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
We've been slipping slowly south
I guess my tongue is tied
To the starry sky tonight
'Cause I'm not sure what's going on
I feel the earth quaking beneath me
It feels like elephants
Trampling my hollow chest
If I could move just one fingernail
I'd scratch your name on the back of my hand
So I would never forget you again
Remember when was way back then
And as for now, I'm just dangling
Between the moon and melon sunset
The lyrics of "Where Are You" by Saves The Day are full of longing and confusion. The song seems to be about a relationship that is drifting apart, and the singer is struggling to understand what has happened. The first verse sets the scene with the repeated question "Where are you and where am I?" which suggests a feeling of disorientation and disconnection. The second line, "We've been slipping slowly south," implies a sense of movement away from something, and this is compounded by the next line: "I guess my tongue is tied / To the starry sky tonight." Here, the singer feels unable to speak, as if he has lost his voice and is stranded in a vast, empty space.
The second verse expands on this theme, with the singer expressing his uncertainty about the situation: "I'm not sure what's going on / I feel the earth quaking beneath me." He then uses a striking metaphor to describe his emotional state: "It feels like elephants / Trampling my hollow chest." This image suggests a feeling of overwhelming pressure and suffocation. Despite this, the singer still longs to connect with the person he has lost: "If I could move just one fingernail / I'd scratch your name on the back of my hand / So I would never forget you again."
The final lines of the song are enigmatic and haunting: "Remember when was way back then / And as for now, I'm just dangling / Between the moon and melon sunset." These lines suggest a sense of nostalgia for a past when things were simpler, but also a feeling of being suspended in a liminal state between day and night, light and dark, reality and dream. Overall, "Where Are You" is a poignant and powerful exploration of the pain of lost love and the search for connection and meaning in a confusing world.
