Something In The Way
Scapegoat Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There's something in the way you held your head
And the light silhouetting the sight
Something's gotta give in this image
For the beauty's ensuring soar eyes and
No one ever knows who will
No one ever knows who won't
No one ever knows who will and who won't
We're practicing the art of wasting away
In the brace of each others arms
Under the sun, my lover and me
What a picture in my wallet this would be
It's all that I need

There's something in the air in which you stand
And the aroma that passes in the wind
Something's gotta give in this image
For the beauty's ensuring my end and
No one ever knows, but i've been dying to tell you
No one ever knows, it keeps me dying to tell you
No one ever knows who will and who won't

We're practicing the art of wasting away
In the brace of each others arms
Under the sun, my lover and me
What a picture in my wallet this would be
It's all that I need
It's all that I need
It's all that I need

She's all that I need
She's all that I need
She's all that I need
You're all that I need
You're all that I need

We're practicing the art of wasting away
In the brace of each others arms
Je suis, my lover and me
What a picture in my wallet this would be

We're practicing the art of wasting away
In the brace of each others arms
Under the sun, my lover and me
What a picture in my wallet this would be
It's all that I need

It's all that I need
It's all that I need

Overall Meaning

In "Something in the Way," Scapegoat explore the themes of beauty, love, and the fleeting nature of life itself. The opening verse describes the way the subject holds their head and the light behind them, producing a beautiful image. However, the line "something's gotta give in this image" suggests that the singer senses the transience of such a moment. The repetition of "no one ever knows who will and who won't" emphasizes the unknowable nature of what happens next. This is followed by a chorus that speaks to the desperation of the singer's love, describing the act of "practicing the art of wasting away" in each other's arms, under the sun. The line "what a picture in my wallet this would be" speaks to the desire to capture and preserve the moment of beauty described earlier.

The second verse continues with the theme of beauty mixed with self-destructive longing. The "aroma that passes in the wind" creates a sensory experience of something fleeting, just as the singer desires to express their own feelings. The repetition of "no one ever knows" this time reflects the fact that the singer has been holding back, "dying to tell you." The refrain repeats, emphasizing the central role of love in the song. The final lines give voice to the lover being addressed, switching to French with "je suis" ("I am"), emphasizing the intimacy and unity of the couple.

Overall, "Something in the Way" is a beautiful yet melancholy song that speaks to the desire to capture and preserve fleeting moments of beauty and love.

I love this song so much. Back in high school I had a friend over and I was gonna show him how fast I could speed run the original Resident Evil. Of course this was back in the day when iPods dominated so he whipped out his iPod and showed me this song because of the intro to the song. It took me forever to find this song on here cause I had forgotten what it was called. Anyways I do hope you guys are still around and rocking.
