Schandmaul was founded in the summer of 1998, when six musicians from Munich and the surrounding area decided to put on a concert of folksongs. Because just doing covers was not enough, they decided to write some of their own stuff. Thus was created the first tune they wrote themselves, "Teufelsweib" (Devil Woman), which already had what was to become the typical Schandmaul sound that they've built on over the years.

As the lyrics to Schandmaul's "Sturmnacht" are an instrumental, there are no words to interpret. However, instrumental music can still convey a range of emotions and tell a story through melody, harmony, and tone. From the title of the song, "Sturmnacht," or "Storm Night," we can infer that the music may evoke a sense of chaos or turbulence. The instrumental could be inspired by a stormy night, with the sound of thunder and rain represented through percussion and other instruments.
