1. Emerging from the rubble of several outfits (most notably Salvation, Slik, Zones and PVC2, the latter featuring Midge Ure on guitar) Science saw Scotsmen Billy McIsaac and Kenny Hyslop take a turn for the futuristic: synthesizers, minimal and what have you. Two singles followed: 'Tokyo' and 'Look Don't Touch', both in 1980. Both failed to chart and Science disbanded. McIsaac pursued a solo career; Hyslop briefly played in Simple Minds.

With this lonely game we play
Looking for words to say
Searching but not finding
Understanding anywhere
We′re lost in a masquerade
Both afraid to say we're just to far away
From being close together from the start
We tried to talk it over but the words got in the way
We′re lost inside this lonely game we play
Thoughts of weeping disappear
Every time I see your eyes
No matter how hard I try
To understand the reasons
That we carry on this way
We're lost in a masquerade
The lyrics to Science's song Masquerade depict the reality of a failed relationship where the couple is lost in their own game of pretending to be happy. The opening lines pose a question to the listener, questioning whether they are truly happy or not. This is reflective of the couple in the song who are also questioning the authenticity of their relationship. The next line, "With this lonely game we play", further emphasizes the theme of fake happiness and highlights the isolation felt by the couple.
The verse continues with the couple struggling to find words to express their emotions and failing to understand each other. They are both too afraid to admit that they have grown too far apart and the words that they try to communicate get in the way. This line mirrors the complexity of their relationship and the difficulty they face in trying to bridge the gap between them. The chorus, "We're lost in a masquerade", sums up the entire theme of the song where the couple is lost and confused, pretending to be happy while they are actually lost in their own world.
The lyrics culminate with the couple giving up on their relationship and accepting their fate. They have both stopped trying to understand each other and acknowledge that they are stuck in a lonely game. The final line of the chorus reiterates the idea that they are lost in their own game of pretending to be happy, a game that they have both accepted and given in to.
