Boot
Screaming Mechanical Brain Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Can I get a witness, can I reboot to the menu screen?
The stupid leading the blind is why I wish I could be just
Retarded! Retarded!
Told you once I told you twice I lost my mind and then my voice
Told you once I told you twice I lost my mind and then my voice
Retarded! Retarded!
Whoa whoa whoa
Retard retard retard
If ignorance is bliss enlightenment is punishment
If ignorance is bliss enlightenment is punishment
The stupid leading the blind is why I wish I could be just
Retarded! Retarded! Retarded!
Come sit on grandpa's lap.
The lyrics to Screaming Mechanical Brain's song Boot can be interpreted in a number of ways, but at its core, it seems to be a commentary on the frustrations of modern technology and the way that our reliance on it often makes us feel overwhelmed and powerless. The repeated refrain of "Can I get a witness, can I reboot to the menu screen?" suggests a plea for help and a desire to escape from the constraints of our digital world. The line "the stupid leading the blind" seems to be a criticism of those who are in power but lack the knowledge or understanding to make good decisions, while the repeated use of the word "retarded" is jarring and uncomfortable, perhaps meant to shock us out of our complacency and force us to confront uncomfortable truths.
At the same time, there's a sense of resignation and even humor to the lyrics. The repeated use of the word "retarded" is deliberately absurd and over-the-top, and the final line of the song -"Come sit on grandpa's lap" - feels like a bit of a non-sequitur, almost like the singer is saying "well, we're all screwed anyway, we might as well try to find some small comfort in the chaos."
Overall, Boot is a provocative and challenging song that forces us to confront some uncomfortable truths about our relationship with technology and the world around us.
