03. You Raise Me Up
Secret Garden Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary
When troubles come and my heart burdened be
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence
Until you come and sit awhile with me

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders
You raise me up To more than I can be

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders
You raise me up To more than I can be

There is no life no life without its hunger
Each restless heart beats so imperfectly
But when you come and I am filled with wonder
Sometimes, I think I glimpse eternity

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas
I am strong, when I am on your shoulders
You raise me up To more than I can be

You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas

I am strong, when I am on your shoulders
You raise me up To more than I can be

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Secret Garden’s song “You Raise Me Up” express the idea of relying on someone else’s support and strength to overcome difficult situations. The first verse sets the scene of the singer being down and feeling weary, while the second one highlights the importance of waiting in the silence until someone else comes along to sit with us. The chorus repetitively stresses the idea of being raised up, both metaphorically and physically. This action of raising, which is associated with overcoming obstacles, is repeated several times to emphasize how the singer is empowered by their supporter to stand on mountains, walk on stormy seas, and be strong. The second verse introduces the theme of imperfection, as every restless heart has its hunger, but when the singer’s supporter is around, they feel filled with wonder and a sense of eternity.

The lyrics of “You Raise Me Up” convey a powerful message of hope, support, and inspiration. The singer feels empowered to achieve more than they would have without their supporter. The song is a testament to the idea that when we are faced with challenges, we are not alone, and there is always someone who can help us overcome them.

Quando estou triste e, oh minha alma, tão cansado
When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary

When troubles come and my heart burdened be

Então, eu fico quieto e espero aqui no silêncio
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence

Until you come and sit awhile with me
Você me levanta, então eu posso ficar nas montanhas
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains

Você me levanta, para andar em mares tempestuosos
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas

I am strong, when I am on your shoulders

You raise me up To more than I can be
Você me levanta, então eu posso ficar nas montanhas
You raise me up, so I can stand on mountains

Você me levanta, para andar em mares tempestuosos
You raise me up, to walk on stormy seas

I am strong, when I am on your shoulders

You raise me up To more than I can be
There is no life no life without its hunger

Cada coração inquieto bate tão imperfeitamente
Each restless heart beats so imperfectly

But when you come and I am filled with wonder

Às vezes, acho que vislumbro a eternidade
Sometimes, I think I glimpse eternity

This song touches me so deeply now. When I first heard the second verse of this song, which most artists leave out for some reason, I realized that this song was about so much more than the love of another person.
May the spirit that is the giver of all life, our Father, bless you.

This is the original..and it's always the best

Johnny Logan did not sing the first rendition of this song with Secret Garden. It was Brian Kennedy who first recorded it with them. It's a great rendition though. Edit: Apologies - it seems Johnny Logan actually performed this with Secret Garden before they recorded it with Brian Kennedy! :)
