The original members were Richard Fielding and Andrew Wright, and were soon joined by Tom Ellard. This later changed to Garry Bradbury, Paul Deering, and Tom Ellard; Ellard has been the only one to remain throughout the group's career, with changing lineups throughout its two and a half decades of existence, later working mainly with Stephen Jones. Robert Racic was an integral part of the band during the late eighties/early nineties.
Severed Heads performed a final concert in Sydney in January 2010. Tom Ellard uploaded a farewell video of Sevs in Space to Youtube, which may be considered as a requiem of sorts.
In early 2008, Ellard added the following text to the bottom of the official site's front page, "Severed Heads do not have a MySpace page. It is a fake. The band is dead,". (www.sevcom.com).
Life in the Whale
Severed Heads Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Therein the hopes of the unsaved
Drunk on the aqua vital
Fallen in vessels, broken in seas
And my hands are as tight as the tightness can be
And they hold on the thoughts of another
And my throat is dry as the dryness can be
And these are the floats of another
The lyrics to Severed Heads' song "Life in the Whale" seem to paint a picture of being lost and isolated in the depths of the ocean, surrounded by the unknown and abandoned by salvation. The opening line "here in the depths of the whale" sets the stage for this feeling of desperation and hopelessness. The mention of being "drunk on the aqua vital" suggests a certain level of delirium or disorientation, as if the singer has lost their own sense of self and is beginning to succumb to the forces around them.
The second stanza, with the lines "my hands are as tight as the tightness can be/ and they hold on the thoughts of another" suggests a kind of clinging to some form of external hope or guidance. It's as if the singer is grasping at something outside of themselves, trying to hold onto anything that might give them a sense of direction or meaning in this situation of being lost in the whale. The final line, "and these are the floats of another" further emphasizes this idea of relying on something outside of oneself, as if the singer is adrift and hoping to be carried to safety by the currents of another's guidance.

Here in the depths of the whale
Within the depths of despair and hopelessness
Therein the hopes of the unsaved
Some still hold onto hope despite being lost
Drunk on the aqua vital
Intoxicated by the deceptive comfort of water
Fallen in vessels, broken in seas
Trapped in broken and shattered lives
And my hands are as tight as the tightness can be
Feeling trapped and powerless
And they hold on the thoughts of another
Finding solace in the thoughts of another
And my throat is dry as the dryness can be
Feeling parched and empty inside
And these are the floats of another
Taking comfort in the hope of someone else's salvation
