The original members were Richard Fielding and Andrew Wright, and were soon joined by Tom Ellard. This later changed to Garry Bradbury, Paul Deering, and Tom Ellard; Ellard has been the only one to remain throughout the group's career, with changing lineups throughout its two and a half decades of existence, later working mainly with Stephen Jones. Robert Racic was an integral part of the band during the late eighties/early nineties.
Severed Heads performed a final concert in Sydney in January 2010. Tom Ellard uploaded a farewell video of Sevs in Space to Youtube, which may be considered as a requiem of sorts.
In early 2008, Ellard added the following text to the bottom of the official site's front page, "Severed Heads do not have a MySpace page. It is a fake. The band is dead,". (www.sevcom.com).
Ugly Twenties
Severed Heads Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
That your laugh had caught another ear
And the seeds that I had spread
Entered in another bed and...
See Fold your face in a lie
Curry the favour of magazines
Weigh the words in a style
Reflects back well on yourself
A walk in ways that I can recall
In a memory that falls
Dark in parts and sad in total--see
Oh, talk and preen yourself
Splash on colours and eternity
In the boasts that you tell
Sleep fast in your media shell--see
The lyrics to Severed Heads' song Ugly Twenties seem to talk about the singer's disappointment and sadness towards someone they care about. The opening lines suggest that their friend's attention has been caught by someone else's laughter, which leads to the realization that the seeds they had sown (presumably for their relationship or rapport) have instead grown in an entirely different bed. The lines "fold your face in a lie, curry the favour of magazines" imply that the person has become fake, putting on a false front to impress others and gain media attention.
The next lines criticize their choice of words and style, suggesting that they care more about how they come across than the substance behind their words. The lines "is it serious? An understanding? A walk in ways that I can recall in a memory that falls, dark in parts and sad in total" express a deep disappointment in the person's behavior and how they have chosen to present themselves to the world. The final lines "oh, talk and preen yourself, splash on colours and eternity in the boasts that you tell, sleep fast in your media shell" further criticize the person's reliance on media and showmanship to boost their image while ignoring their true self.
