Satellite
Sex Pistols Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Suburban kid, ya got no name
Two ton(e) baby and ya got no brain
I bet you're only happy in suburbian dreams
But I'm only laughing cause you ain't in my scheme

Hey baby
I love you
I love you
I love you

I only ever listen when you're on the phone
From your safety where you sit at home
When I got nothin' better to do
Then there is always you
Cause you're good for my shoe

Hey baby
I love you
I love you
I love you

I'm in love
Yeah in love
Oh, can't you feel it?

No I don't like where you come from
It's just a satellite of London
And when you look me in the eye
Just remember that I wanna die

Hey baby
I love you
I love you
I love you

You're the name but you can't tell
Lookin' like you just came outta hell
How did ya figure that'd you'd any use?
All you're gonna get is my abuse

Hey baby
I love you
I love you

I love you
I love you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Sex Pistols' song "Satellite" are a critique of suburban life, specifically targeting individuals who lack individuality and purpose. The opening lines describe a suburban youth who is nameless and lacks intelligence, finding happiness only in their suburban dreams. The singer, in contrast, finds the situation laughable because the suburban youth is not a part of his own "scheme."

The chorus repeats the phrase "I love you," but it is unclear whether this is meant sardonically or as a genuine expression of affection. The following verse suggests that the singer only pays attention to the suburban youth when he is on the phone and has nothing better to do, and that the youth is good for his "shoe," which could either mean that he is using the youth as a stepping stone or that the youth is just good for killing time.

Later verses continue the critical tone, referring to the suburban youth as a "satellite of London" and accusing them of having no purpose or use beyond being abused by the singer. The final lines of the song, where the singer tells the youth that they are loved but also that all they will get is abuse, further underscores the ambiguous tone of the song.

Overall, "Satellite" can be interpreted as a commentary on the emptiness and lack of individualism in suburban life, as well as the ways in which people can use others for their own amusement or to pass the time.

This video has the architect of the SEX PISTOLS' music in it.
The great GLEN MATLOCK.
They showed their appreciation by kicking him out of the Band.

I think Rotten and Matlock clashed on a personal level.
Whereas, Rotten was very good mates with Vicious.
Vicious looked the part, he became the poster boy for Punk.
Luckily, I saw Glen play LIVE with The Pistols in October 1995 in Sydney.
In 2017, I saw Glen play at The Landsdowne Hotel in Sydney.
I stood a meter away from him, right in front of him.
The whole Band were bloody awesome, one of the most special gigs I've been to.
Glen said, the Drummer had just turned 18, it was OK, his mother knew he was out tonight.
Met him after the show, he was a TOP bloke.
We talked about the writing of "DID YOU NO WRONG" which is a personal favourite of mine.
He was great.

1 album, 4 singles, 2 years. 4/5 blokes that supposedly couldn't play or sing. Greatest band in the world, ever.
Quality over quantity.
