Visitor
Shades Apart Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I guess you 're wondering why I brought you here
It seemed like such a good idea at the time
I was thinking you would sort things out
If I could just explain away the consequences

Please meet me on neutral ground
It's not fair to me when you smile
Promise you won't see through me
A promise of time

Sorry that the place is such a mess
Things all piled up at once I guess

How can you look at me like I'm insane
All I want to give you is some understanding

Overall Meaning

The opening line of "Visitor" by Shades Apart suggests that the singer has brought someone to a place and is concerned that the visitor might be confused about why they are there. Meanwhile, the singer believed it was a good idea to bring this person there. The reason for the visit, however, is somewhat unclear, but it seems that the singer believes that this person could help sort things out or provide some understanding.

The next two lines, "If I could just explain away the consequences/Promise you won't see through me," imply that the singer has done something that they regret or feel guilty about, and they hoped that the visitor could make everything right. The plea for the visitor not to see through them suggests that the singer is worried that the visitor may judge them harshly or see them differently if they knew the full story.

When the singer asks the visitor to meet them on neutral ground, it suggests that they want an unbiased discussion where both parties can hear each other out without any preconceived notions. The singer also asks for a promise of time, implying that they need this visitor's attention for longer than just a few minutes.

"Sorry that the place is such a mess/Things all piled up at once I guess" indicates that the situation that the singer finds themselves in is complicated and messy. They are not sure how to solve the problem, and they need the visitor's help. The final line of the chorus, "How can you look at me like I'm insane," reveals the singer's vulnerability and anxiety about being judged.

The second verse continues in a similar vein, with the singer expressing a sense of loneliness and isolation: "And I was so alone/My friends just couldn't understand." The lyrics seem to suggest that whatever the singer did or is involved in is causing strife in their relationships, and they need someone who can see through their actions and understand their true intentions.

In conclusion, Shades Apart's "Visitor" lyrics suggest a complicated and emotionally fraught situation where the singer has done something they regret and hopes that the visitor can provide some help or understanding. Throughout the song, there is a sense of vulnerability and anxiety about judgment, with the singer being desperate for someone to see through their actions and empathize with their situation.

This is where they started to sound better, ultimately culminating in 1999 with their "Eyewitness" album, one of the catchiest pop/rock albums of all time.

I saw them playing live i guess like 3 times on their European tour in 90's. It was awesome. It sounded exactly the same as on the record. I was really impressed! 👍🏻🎸🎶
