Silverstein's passion for music was clear early on as he studied for a while at the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University. As a songwriter, Silverstein kept a low profile but cast a long shadow. He tended to shun publicity and even photographers. Nonetheless, his musical output included many songs which were hits for other artists. Most notably, he wrote the music and lyrics for "A Boy Named Sue" that was performed by Johnny Cash (for which he won a Grammy in 1970); "One's on the Way" (which was a hit for Loretta Lynn), and "The Unicorn Song" which, despite having nothing to do with Ireland nor Irish culture, became the signature piece for The Irish Rovers in 1968 and is popular in pubs all over the world to this day. He wrote the lyrics and music for most of the Dr. Hook songs, including "Cover of the Rolling Stone", "Freakin' at the Freakers' Ball", "Sylvia's Mother", and the cautionary song about VD, "Don't Give a Dose to the One You Love Most". He also wrote many of the songs performed by Bobby Bare, including "Marie Laveau", "Rosalie's Good Eats Cafe", "The Mermaid", "The Winner", and "Tequila Sheila". The song "The Ballad of Lucy Jordan",] recorded in 1979 by Marianne Faithfull and later featured in the films Montenegro and Thelma & Louise, was also by Silverstein.
A Front Row Seat to Hear Ole Johnny Sing
Shel Silverstein Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Yeah, and other fellahs they just wanna swing
But all I wanted all my life
Was a TV set and a truck and a wife
And a front row seat to hear ole Johnny sing.
Yeah the TV and the truck I got on credit.
And I got that girl with a little old Woolworth ring
But still, it was kinda incomplete
Without a front row seat to hear ole Johnny sing.
chorus:
Hey, John you walk the line,
Do "Deelia" one more time
And when you do them Cottonfields
You warm this heart of mine.
So, one day I thought, Hey, I'm gonna do it!
(That's what I said)
So, I mortgaged the farm and pawned her wedding ring.
I sold the gold tooth out of my mouth
And jumped in the pickup and headed South.
For a front row seat to hear ole Johnny sing.
I hit Nashville cold and wet and hungry.
I said, "I'm here, bring him on let him do his thing."
But they told me down at the Old Pit Grill
I'd have to go all the way to Andersonville
For a front row seat to hear ole Jonny sing.
I found his house knocked on the door and it was opened
By a brown-haired girl and a baby with a teethin' ring.
I said "I seen you somewhere before
But don't stand there and block the door
I want a front row seat to hear ole Johnny sing."
(chorus)
She said I'd have to go down to The Opry
And the feller there said I'd have to wait till Spring.
He said, "We've been sold out for months and months
And this poor insane fellah wants
A front row seat to hear ole Johnny sing."
Well, he said a couple more things, and I started cryin'
And then he laughed at me and that's when I started to swing.
Well I bust through the doors in a roaring rage,
Crawled over the crowd till I reached the stage
For a front row seat to hear ole Johnny sing.
(chrous)
Then some crazy guard started shootin'
I shot back, and the next thing I know I was winged
And on the floor
When a guy in a voice kinda deep and low
Says, "Boy that's a mighty long way to go
For a front row seat to hear ANYBODY sing."
And I guess that judge, he weren't no music lover.
I got fifteen months but that don't mean a thing.
'cause' yesterday in the prison yard
A show come through and HAR! de HAR!
I had a front row seat to hear ole Johnny sing.
(chorus plus some typical Shel ranting and raving)
The song "A Front Row Seat to Hear Ole Johnny Sing" by Shel Silverstein tells a story of a man who dreams of having a front row seat to hear Johnny Cash sing. The singer explains that while some people want fame and fortune, a truck, a TV, and a wife are all he ever needed. However, his life felt incomplete without that front row seat to hear Johnny Cash sing. The singer then decides to sacrifice everything he has to get that front row seat, including mortgaging his farm, pawning his wife's wedding ring, selling his gold tooth, and traveling to Nashville. When he finally arrives in Nashville and makes his way to the Old Pit Grill, he learns that he has to go to Andersonville for a front row seat to hear Johnny Cash sing. Despite this, the singer eventually gets his front row seat but not without a little drama along the way.
The song speaks to the idea of chasing after one's dreams, no matter the cost, which is a common theme in Shel Silverstein's work. It also touches on the idea of how something as simple as hearing a favorite musician sing can bring a lot of joy and fulfillment to one's life. The singer's journey shows that sometimes, the journey and struggle to achieve a dream can be just as meaningful as actually achieving it. Overall, the song is a light-hearted and humorous tale that draws upon Silverstein's unique storytelling abilities.
