So Far Away
Sheryl Crow Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So far away
Doesn't anybody stay in one place any more?
It would be so fine to see your face at my door
It doesn't help to know you're just time away
Long ago I reached for you and there you stood
Holding you again could only do me good
Oh how I wish I could but you're so far away
One more song about moving along the highway
Can't say much of anything that's new
If I could only work this life out my way
I'd rather spend it being close to you

But you're so far away
Doesn't anybody stay in one place any more?
It would be so fine to see your face at my door
It doesn't help to know you're so far away
Yeah yeah so far away

Traveling around sure gets me down and lonely
Nothing else to do but close my mind
I sure hope the road don't come to own me
There's so many dreams I've yet to find

But you're so far away
Doesn't anybody stay in one place any more?
It would be so fine to see your face at my door

And it doesn't help to know you're so far away
Yeah yeah so far away, yeh, you're so far away

Overall Meaning

Sheryl Crow's "So Far Away" speaks to the struggles of distance and movement in a world where people are always on the go. The song is a lament for the loss of stability and constant companionship in life, as the singer wishes for the company of somebody they care about. The opening lines express a sense of longing for connection and intimacy, as the singer questions whether anyone stays in one place anymore. The phrase "it would be so fine to see your face at my door" highlights the desire for human connection that seems unattainable in a world where constant motion is the norm. The idea that knowing the person is only "time away" adds to the bittersweet quality of the song; the singer is aware that they will reunite eventually, but the present moment feels distant and isolating.

The second verse continues with a theme of restlessness and uncertainty, as the singer wishes they could make their life work out so they could be close to their loved one. The idea of finding a way to balance personal fulfillment and meaningful relationships is something that many people can relate to. Later, the singer laments the isolation of travel, expressing a hope that they won't be consumed by loneliness.

Overall, "So Far Away" is a poignant exploration of the emotional toll of distance and movement. The song speaks to the human need for love, connection and stability in a rapidly changing world.

Lyrics:
I've been long
A long way from here
Put on a poncho, played for mosquitoes
And drank 'til I was thirsty again

We went searchin'
Through thrift store jungles
Found Geronimo's rifle, Marilyn's shampoo
And Benny Goodman's corset and pen

Well, okay, I made this up
I promised you I'd never give up

If it makes you happy
It can't be that bad
If it makes you happy
Then why the hell are you so sad?

We get down
A real low down
You listen to Coltrane, derail your own train
Well, who hasn't been there before?

I come proud
Around the hard way
Bring you comics in bed, scrape the mold off the bread
And serve you French toast again

Well, okay, I still get stoned
I'm not the kind of girl you'd take home

If it makes you happy
It can't be that bad
If it makes you happy
Then why the hell are you so sad?

If it makes you happy
It can't be that bad
If it makes you happy
Then why the hell are you so sad?

We've been far
Far away from here
Put on a poncho, played for mosquitoes
And everywhere in between

Well, okay, we get along
So what if right now everything's wrong?

If it makes you happy
It can't be that bad
If it makes you happy
Then why the hell are you so sad?

If it makes you happy
It can't be that bad
If it makes you happy
Then why the hell are you so sad?

This song hit me like a ton of bricks when I first heard it in the 90s, just as I was beginning to see my life for what it was. I was 26 and basically trying to make others happy at my own expense.

Hearing Sheryl belt out the chorus of this song was like an awakening, it brought to the surface everything I had suspected about my life. That was one of the catalysts for change over the next decade.

I will never grow tired of this song.
