You forgot another thing with siamese cats: As they age and naturally get less active they also get darker, to the point you can almost tell their age from how dark they are.

Doesn't that depend on which markings it has i.e.: seal v.s chocolate point? I've always heard cats coats complete it's adult coloring around 2yrs & maintains it until when it starts to get grey/white hairs when old (10+)

Most Siamese cats remain active right until very old age. It has to do with their body temperature changing as they get older not about activity level. My Siamese cat hardly change colors. She did a lot of sunbathing and had heated bed, plus a cooling bed for hot days. She lived until age 23 years old. Her activity level did slow down but not by much. Same goes for my second Siamese cat whos very active for a 11 year old cat. Had other domestic cats slowly start to slow down around age 9 and by age 11 slow down to point of being lazy. Most of the time you can see the difference in a 11 year old cat slowing down. Not a Siamese lol

I watched this boy in my icon from the day he was born to the day he passed. He went from white, to red ears and tail, to a little bit of a mask, then in his later years all of his fur was cream to orange with little individual furs of black here and there on his face (his mask), almost like an old man turning grey. He was the best boy ever. It's been 4 years since we said goodbye and I miss him every day. ❤ my Noah.

Talking about “tiger” cats, I took care of a mixed, mostly orange cat that had triplets: all completely orange, and 2 of them were female. Pretty rare, NGL. She also once had twins, and the female came almost like an albino; she’s practically pink! Its really cute and I’ve never seen a cat like her. Only in a vid of a kitten that was a little bit darker

Orange female cats are uncommon, not rare. I’ve got one. If two orange cats have kittens, every daughter will be orange, and there is the possibility of orange daughters when a calico/tortie mates with an orange male. Male torties, on the other hand, are literally 1 in 3000.

I used to have a Siamese mix. The fur on her sides looked like roasted marshmallows. She still had the blue eyes, dark points and "voice". I rescued her from literal death. Her owner was dragging her by the neck on a rope to dump her somewhere or kill her. I begged to take her from this stranger. She was one of the best cats, so sweet and loving! She had feline leukemia and lived several years with us until she passed away. This was the 80's.

Your tortie point is actually a calico point. Or imagine a tortie with socks and a white belly and what not. Then put the "siamese" gene on top.

So now all of the colors underneath the siamese gene show through. If she would only have one sock, the siamese gene would be irrelevant, that area is coded to be pigmentless.

My aunt has a cat who’s dad was a siamese and who’s mom was just a random street cat. Her cat looks just like a Siamese but has faint dark creme stripes on her body. It’s very weird.

@Who Ever I would talk to a vet about it. It could be a sign of a health issue. My kitten sometimes does that, but in his case, it's when he's overly excited, he starts to pant. The vet told us he's fine, but to let them know if it gets worse. He's mostly outgrown it now.

When my parents adopted my first kitty when I was a baby and they thought he was Siamese but then he grew up alongside me and he turned into a gorgeous brown tabby with a big ol' bullseye on his side! I miss him... He was inseparable from me and would sleep in my crib, he would wake up my parents to take care of me in the middle of the night when I woke up.

Question, does this mean siamese raised in colder climates will be generally darker/have more extensive coloration than ones raised in, say, desert or other hotter areas?

Cats are mammals and warm blooded. Unlike humans, cats cool themselves through their pads and by panting. Since they are able to maintain a constant temperature as adults, I'd say that no, the external temperature likely would not have much impact on the color expression. If it did the Siamese cats in really hot climates would be black/dark brown all over snx we just don't see that. Once the cat gets into a hotter environment, it self regulates and cools by evaporation (pads and lining of the mouth) maintaining a constant temperature.

Likely some older siamese cats turn darker because of reduced circulation due to senescence.

I think it would only make a slight difference in the shade of the color since the animal temperature is mostly stable for their own health, so even the tips of their body wouldn't lose more heat than normal, only if they really stood in a possibility dangerously cold temperature.

I learned about this a couple years ago doing research because we had two siamesecats (they technically arent a siamese breed, they have a "pointed" gene and if you have an orange cat with the pointed gene, then you will have a "siamese looking" pointed orange cat, which I think they are called pointed cream cats) lol anyway and neither of the siamese cat parents had pointed mutation and we were curious about the outcome if the siamese cats had kittens. How would their kittens turn out? It turns out the kittens ended up looking alot like the cat parents and only one came out with the mutation.
I love scishow and it was so satisfying to see them make a video about these beautiful cats. I have had the same cat for about 4 years now and he used to be so white, but he is looking alot more grayer these days.
Another fun fact all cats are born with blue eyes, newborn kittens are yet to develop pigmentation in the eyes so when we look at them and see "blue" what we are actually seeing is a lack of color combined with refraction of light" pointed cats are technically partially albino so their eyes never develop pigment leaving them blue always. Which is also why blue eyes in general are much more sensitive to light than eyes with melanin in them obviously :)
But I have a question too, (and by all means I'm not suggesting to shave your cat, they could get hurt!)
But
If you shaved for instance a small heart or star shape on the cat, would the fur grow back darker then the rest of the fur leaving a forever heart or star.😅

@Kathryn Geeslin No worries there, he won't be looking after my house again. Had I been a few days later, I would have likely arrived home to frozen water pipes. Also, no worries about premature aging, at the rate this cat seems to be going, she'll probably hit 20 years old. She's in fantastic shape for a 12 year old cat.

@Springdragon Actually, the blue eyes are caused by that gene. Every single pointed cat, regardless of breed, is always blue-eyed. This is because points are a form of albinism. Mink and Burmese/sepia cats (caused by a mutated point gene, which allows slightly more colour) can have eye colours besides blue, but it's rare to uncommon depending on the breed.

It isn't. That's actually a completely different gene that can express in oriental breeds without the colorpoint coat.

However, the white masking gene will cause blue when it expresses over the eyes and deafness when expressed over the ears.

My two Ragdoll cats have this same color mutation, and I've even had fancy rats with the siamese type coloration. The coloring doesn't just stop with face mask, paws and tails. Over time the entire body darkens, but is still always lighter colored than the extremities. I've always been fascinated by this color pattern. I would love a genetic explanation behind how hybrids keep their "calico" coloring; i.e.: why Bengal cats can be the same variety of colors as a calico cat, and yet easily be both genders. Also, can you control the amount of dark areas on a Siamese depending on how warm or cool the area around it is as it's growing?

My cat seems to have this! when we got her from the SPCA when she was about 3 months old (almost 9 years ago now), she was mostly white with a little grey, now she's definitely got darker face, feet and tail, though the rest of her body did darken somewhat and go kind of grey tabby (she's definitely not a true siamese). It's really interesting! especially because I thought I got a mostly white cat, lol. Thanks for the explanation!

That's really interesting! Melanin in humans is also found in the hair, iris, and even the whites of the eyes (the sclera). People with very dark skin sometimes have noticeably yellow sclera instead of the almost-white sclera of lighter-skinned people, as there is a higher concentration of melanin.

I learned all about this when making a decision last year to get a Siamese cat. Well, technically she is a Balinese, which is closely related to the Siamese and develops the same coloration for the same reasons. They are such great cats.

And just like cats, rat kittens start off uniform colour and their points darken over time too. They're not all like that, but it's much more common. Mine got a lot quieter after we got a kitten. I think it wore him out. No more midnight yowling, at least not from the Siamese. The kitten (an orange tabby) does sometimes, but he's only 2 years old. Myth busting time: You may have heard that Siamese cats are "unfriendly" or some other bad thing. That is a MYTH.
The opposite is true in many cases: Siamese cats attach deeply and frequently seek attention; since they're diurnal, they actually become quite used to spending a lot of time with you, much like a puppy. Personally I suspect people develop this antagony because Siamese might be perceived as fancy.
Fun fact: they may be diurnal because their eyes are barely reflective so they can't see as good as other cats at night.

Myth busting time: I don't know where you heard that "barely reflective" thing, but according to breeders (and nighttime photos), the tapetum lucidum in their eyes is totally fine and normal.

@Allan Richardson yeah ive read about it, but the genes linked to it are mostly for the males of humans. Also you could see the red in their eyes if you look hard enough. Bust most of them are blue-eyed.

I found a kitten in one of the apartment complexes that I've lived in who had other siamese traits but was almost all brown, except for his belly and paws. In his brown, you can see slightly darker stripes like a tabby that were more obvious when he was younger. He looks (and talks) for all the world like a siamese cat. I wonder if he ended up like that because he was outside in the cold.

Then I wonder about my best friend who found a cat that was almost totally white except for a black spot on her head. As she got older, that spot disappeared. It seems like the opposite thing happened to her. We also checked to see if she was deaf but she hears better than both of us. She also has blue eyes.

My mom and I always keep the house pretty cold (~65F) for medical reasons, so our poor siamese mix has gotten SUPER dark over the years. She still has pure white parts on her feet, chest, and chin that she got from her mama, but the rest of her is either dark tan or almost black now, whereas when she was younger she was much more cream-colored. At least we've invested in heating pads...and she's still a princess of course.

Something you didn't mention that I've seen in action is that cats with Siamese coloring who live in colder climates will see their fur darken all over their body, although the paws, tail, and nose are still darker. Move them to a more temperate climate and the fur on their body will begin to lighten again as new fur grows in. This is also applicable to different colors, such as flame points. This is distinct from darkening with age, and I've seen it in action in real time.

Wow. I live in the coldest part of Alaska, and this explains why my Siamese cat kept getting darker and darker over her 12 year lifespan. I think half or quarter Siamese are the best cats. Just the right amount of 'feistyness' and intelligence. If I slighted mine in some way, she'd wait until I was comfortable and then get up on a table, a big no. Then she'd slowly push stuff off. She had no interest in the pens, lighters, etc, she was doing it solely to annoy me. I know this 'cause she'd stare right at me the whole time!

I’d love to see them go into why different Siamese have different colors, seal point is traditional, but what about blue point, chocolate point, lilac, flame point... We had a seal and blue point pair that had a range of kitten colors from blue to chocolate and seal.

If you live somewhere where it gets cold then they will also darken over the years. Our older cat is now dark grey while our adolescent cat is still fairly light. Cool to watch.

Fascinating, I have a flame point Siamese, so instead of the traditional brown tips, they are red/orange. There are some flame points like him due to cross breeding with orange tabbies, but sometimes it is due to a truly albino mutation. You can tell the difference in the coloration of the eyes, in an albino, the pupils are a pink color.

I guess this mutation also helps to balance their body temperature. As it's said that nose, ear, tail and paw areas are likely to loose heat more than torso. And we also know that light colours reflect the heat and dark colours emitt sunlight. So those cats fur help lower the torso temperature and increase the extremes temperature.

I have two meezers and a Tonkinese and my meezers are pretty dark almost all over lol. I've heard they can darken with age and mine are 9 and 6. My Tonk is 15 but he's still light all over, although he did darken up over the winter. The cat shelter I work at had a massive Siamese hoarder bust years back and we pulled out several purebred and Siamese mixes among which were several beautiful tortie point meezers. And they're all cross eyed, so extra adorable and dorky

I just used my thermal imager on both of my Maine Coons.
Core body temperature (externally) was ~75F and the paws and tail were ~68F.
7F temperature spread.

Actually, the temp is about that much less in the extremities. That is why you don't take the temp of cats or humans from the extremities. It is that different.
And in sled dogs, for example, their legs can be over ten degrees lower in temp than the core temp.

When we moved to Alabama we inherited several barn cats. Mama barn cat and big daddy had 5 kittens, and the tortie kitten and her tuxedo brother had 9 kittens, one of which was all white with brown points. I knew she was Siamese so I brought her into the house when she was 2 weeks to bottle feed cuz she was small and not getting enough milk.
She’s 9 months now, and she is the cutest lavender point Siamese with a white stripe down the middle of her nose. All kittens were taken to the shelter, and tortie mama got spayed after the last litter. So no more kittens!

This is a super useful video. We got one of our cats from a siamese breeder who had another cat get in with mom and they were giving away kittens. Our cat is almost all black except a few white spots and the breeder told us he was white when he was born along with the litter. Our vet told us that was a stress coat.

I have a cat who's part siamese and part silver tabby. In all of the places that typically darken on a siamese he has silver tabby patterning and ivory fur everywhere else. He also has blue eyes. Such a beautiful cat.

Fun, I have a flamepoint siamese, which is basically an orange cat with the same mutation, usually the result of crossbreeding with Siamese. Cats with this mutation are also darker colored in the winter and lighter in the summer.

I have had siamese for 35 years and never heard of this. I have noticed that they darken all over around 7-10 years old and lighten up to almost white, except their points when they are older than 11. My cats have all surpassed 14 years old .

The thermal effect on a Siamese cat also means that if they have any of thier fur shaved off (for medical treatments) the fur will grow back dark unless you bandage the area.

My Siamese gets sneezey too! Usually, once he starts sneezing, he can't stop until he gets to 30. I feel so bad every time, but also can't help but laugh. Thankfully he only does this like once every couple months.

Oh wow! This explains what happened to my girlfriend's cat when I took her in for a while. My GF (now wife) liked to keep her house warm, like upper 70s. I like to keep my house cool, typically 68° at the time. When I took her cat in, her dark spots got noticably darker over time. Now I know why.

Another interesting trait I’ve noticed with my one and only Lilac Point handsomest Siamese bestie... as he’s aged (just turned 11!) his back has darkened over time from very white to a darker grey.

I wonder if this is the same for all seal point breeds? I’m also curious about sphynx cats (I have four lol), they sometimes have this same coloration that develops from birth, yet they lack fur, so is it the same? Thinking about it though, the ears, nose, paws and tail are the places on a sphynx that usually have fur, so maybe. Interesting stuff lol

We had birmans. Essentially long haired super cuddly Siamese cats. In the winter sometimes their coats would get tangled and we'd cut fur loose. It often gew back dark because so much heat escapes from the short fur. First it has to get longer to produce white fur, and then that white fur has to replace the dark. This always took a long time.
