The Upgrade Pt. II
Slaves Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Oh she cries for something better
Her tears never hit the ground
All she wants is something deeper
Left stranded, still standing
Left stranded, still standing
From the joy, it brings
From the joy
For the masses
Fading in the limelight
Just another drama queen
For the masses
Girl you do it all right
Give up the ghost
Give up the ghost
Time to put it all to rest
Dig your own grave
Oh, you're dying to impress
I poured my soul into it all
And that's more than I can say for yourself
A man who desires to revenge
Should dig two fucking graves
Just another drama queen
For the masses
Fading in the limelight
Just another drama queen
For the masses
Girl you do it all right
Give up the ghost
Give up the ghost
Time to put it all to rest
Dig your own grave
Oh, you're dying to impress
I want you all to myself
But I barely made it out alive
I've got nothing to lose
I've got nothing to lose
I've got nothing to lose
Let's give the devil his dues
Let's give that motherfucker his dues
Just another drama queen
For the masses
Fading in the limelight
Just another drama queen
For the masses
Girl you do it all right
Give up the ghost
Give up the ghost
Time to put it all to rest
Dig your own grave
Oh, you're dying to impress
"The Upgrade Pt. II" by Slaves is a song that explores themes of deceit, manipulation, and the consequences of seeking shallow fame and attention. The lyrics portray a female character who is symbolized as the devil, wearing a white dress to deceive those around her. Despite her outward appearance, she is unhappy and yearns for something deeper and more meaningful in her life. However, her tears never hit the ground, suggesting that her emotions are insincere and shallow.
The chorus of the song addresses the character as a "drama queen," implying that she constantly creates unnecessary conflict and seeks attention from others. She is portrayed as someone who is fading in the limelight, desperate to impress others and gain their admiration. The lyrics urge her to give up this facade and put an end to her self-destructive behavior, metaphorically digging her own grave.
The song also criticizes those who desire revenge, suggesting that it is a futile pursuit that only brings more harm. The lyrics highlight the importance of letting go of negative emotions and moving on, rather than allowing them to consume one's life. Ultimately, the song expresses a desire for personal growth and liberation from the superficiality and drama that surrounds this character.

Why does Jonny Craig need to cling to his last EP? I honestly hated that thing. This song is pretty good overall, but it's tainted to me because of the relation to the previous EP. I never listen to Jonny because of his lyricism, but instead what he does vocally.
I'll admit that he can belt like there's no tomorrow and I really dig this side of him as opposed to the EP. But, what I think any artist needs is variety and while the last EP had way too many dull and boring songs, these two singles may suffer from the other side of the equation.
Oh wait! Here's the dick riders coming to blast me with all the, "What, are you never satisfied?" comments. Heaven forbid I ask for an artist to improve over time! What I should do is accept, no, embrace the stagnation of an artist's creativity.
And before you say that I'm a hater, don't. As I said before, I like the song. I can really dig the kind of djent-y vibe the instrumentation has in some of the parts. Jonny Craig is still one of the best vocalists in the genre who's voice is totally unique and in a league of its own.
However, if I like something it just has to be the greatest end all be all thing in the universe. Conversely, if I don't then it's the most terrible thing since the alternate reality where Hitler conquered the universe. There just cannot be a thing that is good and also has its flaws. That's how the internet works, right?
TL;DR: FUCJK THIS SINGLE JONNY CRAIG IS TERRIBLE NOW AND WHY CANT HE JUST RELEASE RELATIVITY AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN!! ALSO I HATE HIS DYED BLONDE HAIRCUT!!!*
*That last part is actually a little bit true. I liked his red hair more.

i dont see how any of you can say j craig hasnt progressed as an artist. These lyrics are probably some of the deepest and best written hes done. Take a little bit of thinking behind them. His voice is better than ever and he really sings with some motivation and passion. The guitar works in this are really intricate and sound so damn hypnotizing in the background. This shit is fire, and im too stoked to see them in may and hear the rest of this album.

This is my most hyped album of the year! So refreshing to hear this music under Jonny's voice, it actually fits, and isn't just super random or anything. And was that a breakdown in a JCraig song? STELLAR! I'm hoping you guys have stuff like this, and then some super catchy passionate music as well :D

So coming into this, I saw a lot of comments about it not being the best work that Slaves could potentially put out, but I'm honestly blown away by this track.
