What Kind of a Man Are You
Slaves Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I thought we crossed the bridge,
But you still reminding me,
I made a mistake 5 years ago,
But you still talking about it,
Surely, when there's a problem,
Dem always say,
Let sit down and talk and it will be over,
You don't forgive, you don't forget,
What kind of man,

You don't forgive, you don't forget,
What kind of man are you.

Overall Meaning

The song "What Kind of a Man Are You" by Slaves is about the pain caused by someone's inability to forgive and forget. The lyrics talk about a situation where two people thought they had moved on from a past mistake, but one party keeps bringing it up. The singer is perplexed by the other person's unwillingness to let go of the past and move forward. There is a theme of frustration, as the singer struggles with the other person's lack of forgiveness and their obsession with the past mistake.

The verses also mention the common advice given during conflicts: sit down and talk it out. However, the other person seems to be disregarding this advice and holding a grudge. The chorus asks a pointed question: what kind of man are you if you can't forgive and forget? It suggests that the ability to move on from past mistakes is a defining characteristic of a mature and reasonable person.

Overall, "What Kind of a Man Are You" is a reflective and emotional song that grapples with issues of forgiveness, closure, and maturity.

I remember being a hopeless refugee in my own Liberia, and a shop across the street from where I lived would play this Slaves album every night. With their powerful lyrics and indulging lyrics I would escape the harsh realities around me every time. I hope the Slaves know that they provided refuge and an escape for a lost young boy 20 years ago. Thanks for posting.
