Slipknot is well known for its attention-grabbing image, aggressive style of music, and energetic and chaotic live shows. The band rapidly rose to fame following the release of their eponymous debut album in 1999. The 2001 follow-up album, Iowa, although darker in tone, made the band more popular. After a brief hiatus, Slipknot returned in 2004 with Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses, before going on another hiatus and returning in 2008 with its fourth album, All Hope Is Gone, which debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart. After another long hiatus, Slipknot released its fifth studio album, .5: The Gray Chapter, in 2014. Their sixth studio album, We Are Not Your Kind, was released on August 9, 2019. Their seventh studio album, The End, So Far, was released on September 30, 2022. The band has released two live albums titled 9.0: Live and Day of the Gusano: Live in Mexico, a compilation album titled Antennas to Hell, and five live DVDs. The band has sold 30 million records worldwide.

Birth of the Cruel
Slipknot Lyrics

Let him crave your wisdom
Let him crave
Let him need you
Father, by self-control
I'm just a Judas, lookin' for a silver line
And tomorrow is still a step behind
Oh no, thanks so much for wasting mine
So hear me out
Let's hear it for the damaged
Who understands but the broken?
Developed in the arms of spite
I'm all fucked up and I make it look good
Adrenaline sight tonight
I'm overthrown
I'm over your throne
I'm over it
Sick, sickened, I'm sickening, I'm stricken by the fist
Blessed are the fires that have burned me
Listen to this, the lesson is, never underestimate the agony
Death of the fool, birth of the cruel
Remember how you spent the best part of forever
In a state of pure disease?
It was another thing altogether
To forget that you brought out the worst in me
Hey, karma, you don't feel like I do
You just wish you'd hate like I do
We are the bitter, the maladjusted and wise
Fighting off a generation too uptight
We're all dressed up with nobody to kill
The rhetoric stops tonight
I'm overthrown
I'm over your throne
I'm over it
Sick, sickened, I'm sickening, I'm stricken by the fist
Blessed are the fires that have burned me
Listen to this, the lesson is
Never underestimate the agony
Death of the fool
Birth of the
Birth of the cruel
Yeah
Now's not the time for denying
Shifting the focus to scare
Let's not forget we're all guilty
All three dimensions polluted by earnest despair
I'm overthrown
I'm over your throne
I'm overthrown
I'm over your throne
I'm over it
Let him crave understanding
Let him crave your wisdom
Let him crave
Let him need you
Father, by self-control
That he can see, look at the enemy in front of him
Because cursed, not today, sucker
Go back to Hell where you belong
The lyrics of Slipknot's song Birth of the Cruel can be interpreted in different ways, but one common theme is rebellion against societal norms and expectations. The first verse speaks of a desire for someone to crave understanding and wisdom, but it also seems to be a call to a higher power to exercise self-control. The singer then identifies themselves as a Judas, implying betrayal, and acknowledges that they are not quite on the right path.
The chorus introduces the damaged, the broken, and the maladjusted as a group of people who understand each other's pain. The lyric "death of the fool, birth of the cruel" can be seen as a rejection of traditional values and a call to embrace a new way of being, one that is harsh and unforgiving. The second verse seems to be directed at karma, implying that the singer has been hurt by others and is now lashing out.
The final verse acknowledges that everyone is guilty of contributing to the polluted state of society, and the song ends with a call to look at the enemy in front, to face it head-on, and refuse to be cursed.
Overall, the lyrics of Birth of the Cruel are a call to reject conformity and embrace a new way of being, even if it means that the path will be difficult and painful.

These two lines:
"I'm all fucked up and I make it look good"
and
"We're all dressed up with nobody to kill"
Some of Corey's best vocal work that I can remember in a long time
