While touring in Ireland, the discovered the audience would cheer back "Who the Fuck is Alice?". As it turns out , this was a ritual at a Café in Nijmegen (the Netherlands) called "Gompie". The group decided to "cover" this version with comedian Roy Chubby Brown having the honor of yelling "Alice, Who the Fuck is Alice?" during the chorus. Thus, Smokie holds the record as the first group to have a top ten song with the word "fuck" in it.

Desperate Measures
Smokie Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
With this heart of mine
Set it straight if it's not too late
And make it walk the line
I'm runnin' out of time
Desperarte love calls for desperate measures
I'm gonna have to turn my life around
When push comes to shove
Desperate love calls for desperate measures
I'm gonna do what I should have done
Long before today
Set aside my foolish pride
Whatever it may take
Get down on my knees
And get her, darlin' please, please stay
Desperarte love calls for desperate measures
I'm gonna have to turn my life aorund
Or lose her forever
When push comes to shove
Desperate love calls for desperate measures
The lyrics to Smokie's song Desperate Measures address the theme of desperation in love. The singer comes to a realization that their wrongful actions and lack of effort has put their relationship in jeopardy. They want to rectify their mistakes, mend the relationship, and do whatever it takes to win their lover back. The singer admits to running out of time, and with desperation escalating, they vow to take drastic measures.
In the chorus, the phrase "desperate love calls for desperate measures" suggests the singer's willingness to take any extreme action to revive the dying love affair. The verse "Set it straight if it's not too late, and make it walk the line" signals that the singer acknowledges they are at a point of no turning back, yet they're willing to walk the line of uncertainty. The singer promises to deal with their shortcomings, apologize, swallow their pride, get down on their knees and plead for their lover's forgiveness, and do whatever it takes to keep their relationship alive.
