The band were founded at the University of Dundee in 1994 by Lightbody, Mark McClelland, and Michael Morrison of Shrug. After briefly using the name Polarbear, releasing the EP Starfighter Pilot (1997) and losing Morrison as a member, the band became Snow Patrol in 1997 and added Quinn to its lineup. Their first two studio albums, Songs for Polarbears (1998) and When It's All Over We Still Have to Clear Up (2001), released by the independent record label Jeepster Records, were commercially unsuccessful. The band then signed to the major record label Polydor Records in 2002.
Connolly joined Snow Patrol in 2002, and after their major-label debut album, Final Straw, the following year, with "Run", the album's biggest hit, the band rose to national fame. The album was certified 5x platinum in the UK. Their next studio album, Eyes Open (2006), and its hit single, "Chasing Cars"—reported in 2019 to be the most-played song of the 21st century on UK radio—propelled the band to greater international fame. The album topped the UK Albums Chart and was the best-selling British album of the year. In 2008, Snow Patrol released their fifth studio album, A Hundred Million Suns; then, in 2009, they released their first compilation album, Up to Now; and, in 2011, their sixth studio album, Fallen Empires, was published. The band released their seventh album, Wildness, on 25 May 2018.
During the course of their career, Snow Patrol have won seven Meteor Ireland Music Awards and been nominated for six Brit Awards and one Grammy. Final Straw, Eyes Open, and A Hundred Million Suns have sold ten million copies worldwide, combined.

Just something that I understand
I need to taste the warming glow
Of your medicating hands
I know I'm ready for your love
I just don't understand it
There is a silent pact of trust
That I never could admit
So now I'm telling you the reason I'm all messed up,
Just have to look me in the eyes and I fall apart
Please let me hold you til I know we're both through this
I couldn't lead another day without you here in my arms
You look so fragile I could break
But I try to hold myself
Together for the both of us
But in truth I'm just as scared
I just wanna watch you sleep
As you lie here beside me
So close your eyes, I'll guard the door
And when you wake you'll wake with me
And when you wake you'll
So now I'm telling you the reason I'm all messed up
just have to look me in the eye and I fall apart
Please let me hold you til I know we're both through this
I couldn't lead another day without you here in my arms
[Repeat x3]
In my arms
[Repeat to fade]
The lyrics of Snow Patrol's song In My Arms depict a vulnerable and heartfelt confession of love between two individuals. The singer is expressing the depths of his feelings towards the person he loves, and the comfort and healing their presence brings to him. He longs to understand this feeling and is ready to embrace it, but doubts and fears have held him back.
The first verse conveys the singer's desire for the soothing touch of his lover, both physical and emotional. He yearns to be comforted, and to understand the mysterious power of love. The second verse reveals his honesty and vulnerability, as he confesses his fears and anxieties. He needs his lover as much as they need him, and longs to protect and cherish them.
The chorus repeats his need to be held and comforted, and his absolute devotion to the person he loves. By the end of the song, the repetition of the phrase "In my arms" reinforces the idea that the singer has found solace and safety in his lover's embrace, and that they are the only ones who can truly mend his broken heart.
Overall, the song is a powerful statement of unconditional love, trust, and vulnerability. It is a reminder that even the strongest of us need the healing and comforting touch of someone we love.

All I desire is to watch you as you slumber
As you lie here beside me
While you recline adjacent to my being
So close your eyes, I'll guard the door
Therefore, close your eyes and rest, while I safeguard us
And when you wake you'll wake with me
When you finally awaken, I shall be there with you
And when you wake you'll
And when you awaken
In my arms
You shall find yourself cocooned within my embrace
