Anja Plaschg grew up in a small village called Gnas in south east Styria, where her parents have a farm. She has played piano since she was six. At the age of 14 she began violin studies and developed an interest in electronic music. She attended the Graz Polytechnic for Graphic Design, but dropped out at 16 and moved to Vienna shortly afterwards. There she studied art at the Academy of Fine Arts in the master class of Daniel Richter, but at 18 dropped out again.
Musicians like Xiu Xiu, Cat Power, Björk, Nico, Aphex Twin and composers like Sergei Rachmaninoff or Arvo Pärt have had a great impact on her music.
After only playing a handful of concerts she was already being dubbed a "Wunderkind". In 2008 she played German singer Nico in the play "Nico - Sphinx aus Eis" by Werner Fritsch in Berlin and Vienna, performing several songs in it, including "Janitor Of Lunacy", from her first EP.
Her first album, called "Lovetune for Vacuum", was released in March 2009. It received excellent reviews and placed in the Austrian Top 10. The album also achieved chart positions in Germany, Belgium and France. Music journalists have already claimed to see in her a new star of Austrian pop.
In 2010 her song "Mr Gaunt Pt 1000" was used in the television commercial for Ford's Mondeo. In the 2010 French film "Mes chères études" (also known as "Student Services"), the song titled "The Sun" plays during the credits. Her tracks 'Brother of Sleep' and 'Marche Funèbre' were used in the soundtrack for Universal Pictures thriller 'War Games: At the End of the Day' in 2010.
The death of her father in 2009 was a key element on her mini-album Narrow, which was released in February 2012.
Sleep
Soap&Skin Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
They asked me what I do tonight
It answers
Search for the moon
For the moon
No, don't follow him
Swallow him
Swallow it
I swear I will be good to you
I swear I will be good to you
I swear I will be good to you
I swear I will be good
I swear I will be
I swear I will be
I will be
Time
Come hold me back
I'll dream of what I've dreamed of tonight
I dream of what I call love
Time
Come hold me back
I'll dream of what I've dreamed of tonight
I dream of what I call love
The lyrics of Soap&Skin's song Sleep are intriguing and puzzling at first glance. The first stanza starts with the line "I lay on the floor", and already the listener can sense that the song may be about struggling with inner demons or feeling helpless. The second line "They asked me what I do tonight" suggests that the singer is not alone, that someone is watching them or caring for them, but also implies that they are not in their right state of mind. The next line "It answers" is ambiguous, it might mean that the singer's inner voice speaks up or that they answer with silence. The subsequent repetition of "search for the moon" indicates that the singer is seeking guidance or comfort in something they find beautiful or sublime.
The next stanza starts with a plea in the negative "No, don't follow him", which could be interpreted as warning someone else not to follow the singer's example or as the singer resisting their own impulses to escape reality. The repetition of "swallow him" escalates the urgency or the violence that the singer feels towards themselves or others. The sudden change to "swallow it" could suggest that the singer is trying to swallow some medication or other substances to numb their pain. Then the repetition of "I swear I will be good to you" echoes like a mantra, indicating that the singer is trying to convince someone or themselves that they will be better. The final line "I dream of what I call love" suggests that the singer's desires and ideals might differ from what others perceive as love or reality.
Overall, the lyrics reflect the struggles of someone whose mind wanders between darkness and light, who is searching for meaning or relief from their suffering. The song title "Sleep" could be interpreted as a longing to escape or to find peace in unconsciousness.

Does anyone remember a certain fan video of this from back in the day? It was set to a weird short film where a girl is spinning on a merry-go-round and a creepy guy comes out from under her bed. I can't find it anymore :(
