Anja Plaschg grew up in a small village called Gnas in south east Styria, where her parents have a farm. She has played piano since she was six. At the age of 14 she began violin studies and developed an interest in electronic music. She attended the Graz Polytechnic for Graphic Design, but dropped out at 16 and moved to Vienna shortly afterwards. There she studied art at the Academy of Fine Arts in the master class of Daniel Richter, but at 18 dropped out again.
Musicians like Xiu Xiu, Cat Power, Björk, Nico, Aphex Twin and composers like Sergei Rachmaninoff or Arvo Pärt have had a great impact on her music.
After only playing a handful of concerts she was already being dubbed a "Wunderkind". In 2008 she played German singer Nico in the play "Nico - Sphinx aus Eis" by Werner Fritsch in Berlin and Vienna, performing several songs in it, including "Janitor Of Lunacy", from her first EP.
Her first album, called "Lovetune for Vacuum", was released in March 2009. It received excellent reviews and placed in the Austrian Top 10. The album also achieved chart positions in Germany, Belgium and France. Music journalists have already claimed to see in her a new star of Austrian pop.
In 2010 her song "Mr Gaunt Pt 1000" was used in the television commercial for Ford's Mondeo. In the 2010 French film "Mes chères études" (also known as "Student Services"), the song titled "The Sun" plays during the credits. Her tracks 'Brother of Sleep' and 'Marche Funèbre' were used in the soundtrack for Universal Pictures thriller 'War Games: At the End of the Day' in 2010.
The death of her father in 2009 was a key element on her mini-album Narrow, which was released in February 2012.
Fall Foliage
Soap&Skin Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You made me beg for admission cards
You will never stay
In my home on my way
Forlorn from today
We have nothing more to share
Only air, that old breath
As my goad into my grave
One sear scratch is lying in the door
Falling on the floor
All fleet snatch is laying waste my gore
It will drop down on the floor
You will never stay in my home, on my way
Forlorn from today
We'll never find us again
Fall Foliage by Soap&Skin is a melancholic song with a bittersweet theme of loss and separation. The first stanza of the song conveys the profound effect that the person being addressed has had on the singer's life. The line "You made me smile with my heart," suggests that the person has been joyful and uplifting to the singer's innermost being. The next line, "You made me beg for admission cards," implies that the singer has been made to work hard for the person's love and affection. However, in the very next line, the singer declares that the person will never stay in her home or continue on her journey with her. This line is an indication of the inevitable separation that makes the singer feel isolated or desolate.
The second stanza further reveals the extent of the loss felt by the singer. The line "We have nothing more to share," speaks to the idea that their relationship has run its course, and there is nothing left to explore or discover about each other. The singer then goes ahead to liken the separation to a journey towards the ultimate end, the grave. As such, the line, "All I pare off to a road as my goad into my grave," implies that the loss has become the motivation for the singer to embrace the journey of life until it leads to death. The final stanza reiterates the reality of the separation and concludes that they will never find each other again.
In summary, the song Fall Foliage by Soap&Skin is about the experience of separation and loss, and the emotional impact that it has on the person experiencing it. The song captures the subtle nuances of loss and describes its emotional journey in the most poignant ways.
